Default How to get started

I'm new to this and need a simple overview.
I have a laptop running WIn XP Pro
I have a JVC DV CAmera

What is the best way to take the recorded video from the camera and edit it
on my laptop.
Am I right in thinking it is via a firewire connection?
What editing software is the best to use - I've got Windows Movie maker - is
that OK?
I've also got ULead Video Studie 4SE - what can that do?
Also I've got an old analogue video camera - how can I connect and edit that
stuff as well?
Any help really appreciated.
