Did Windows 1809 mess with the taskbar?
I ask because after having recently upgraded to 1809, I have noticed that
the taskbar that I keep at the bottom of the screen is taller than it used to be. I ues the small taskbar buttons, and before the buttons just fit between the top and bottom of the taskbar. Now, there is room enough for an extra row of buttons below the ones I have, and the taskbar refuses to shrink any smaller. Help! |

I can set my XFCE taskbar size anywhere from 16 to 128 pixels, in single pixel increments, with a slider bar, and the buttons automatically follow, one pixel at a time, to fit. |

You can set it to be any height you like and separately, you can lock it so it doesn't change size. Try unlocking, restoring it to your desired height, and then locking it. (Right-click on the taskbar). Not sure how it would have changed with the upgrade, but you should be able to fix it.. |

If you right click the taskbar, is "lock the taskbar" ticked? If so untick it, can you now drag the top edge of the taskbar up and do to make it taller or less tall? |

To clarify: The toolbar is not locked, and I have already set the small icons on. If it wasn't 1809, then it must be my installing the nvidia graphics card, but I can't find any settings anywhere that would affect the tool bar. I know that things are different because where the icons in the notify area used to be in a single line, they are now in two lines. |

If the Nvidia card and driver installation was at fault the likely cause would be a resolution change of the entire screen, not just the task bar Look elsewhere, i.e. what's on the task bar like multiple toolbars which can prevent resizing(they need/use space, even if not shown) If you have 3 columns of dots somewhere on the task bar, there is a good chance that is a toolbar. Right click those rows and close toolbar, or right click task bar and uncheck whichever toolbar you have open from the Toolbars option. Then resize the task bar, and add the toolbar again. Why...because in some cases the task bar can't be resized if the minimum space is already in use when one or more toolbars is open -- ....w¡ñ§±¤ñ msft mvp 2007-2018 |

Either the 1809 upgrade or the GTX 1050 install must have done that, since I never turned on toolbars ever. Now I have to re-resize all my windows that I had to shorten due to the extra space the task bar was taking. I love PCs, and am comfortable with Windows, having used it since 3.1. I have done Unix/Linux, and could be good at it if I put some effort into it, but haven't felt the need so far. I do plan on playing with some of the latest distros in a VM one of these days. Lately I have been spending a lot of time proofreading/editing for some writers on StoriesOnLine. I seem to be in a lull right now with them so maybe will get motivated to play some. |

That could be GeForce Experience. When you install a video driver from NVidia, it has a number of items in it. There is the driver, but there's a lot of other stuff. If you untick everything but the driver, the package still "helps itself" and installs cruft anyway. It's a kind of "predictable dishonesty" we've grown to love. In any case, Geforce Experience isn't installed on my setup, and I also don't have any Toolbars or clutter to show for it. Paul |

In any case, Geforce Experience isn't installed on my setup, and I also don't have any Toolbars or clutter to show for it. Installed 1809 via USB stick on this device earlier today - No new tool bars Downloaded and installed a few NVIDIA driver(for this device MX150 graphics processor) using setup.exe which included GeForce Experience, PhysX and drivers. Was using driver 388.73 replaced with 397.31, then repeated with the latest 418.91(Feb 2019) - No additional toolbars (Quick Launch and Win10 Taskbar remained intact, no new toolbars) - Uninstalled GeForce Experience, PhysX was present before and not removed(its Control Panel provides an option I occasionally use for 3D) Tried, but couldn't duplicate the op's issue - didn't notice anything different with 397 or 418 vs. 388; 397 worked fine/rolled back to it. -- ....winston msft mvp 2007-2019 |
