My app to get the current default browser works on one Win XP Pro laptop
but comes back blank on a different Win XP pro laptop. Both show FireFox as the default browser when I try to load a different browser and it complains that it is not the default. I change the default and still the second laptop app shows blank as the default. How is the default browser stored ? How is it hiding this ? Illumination please. |

At one time, it was easier to find reputable sites with the default .reg file for each extension. There are web sites for Vista/W7/W8/W10, that would have the file for those OSes, but the file would not be the same for any of them, so the files are not necessarily transferable. Now, these came from somewhere. The ZIP contains a .reg file, and to prevent any possibility of accidental "merge", you can add .txt to the end of the unzipped file so you can enjoy it each time in Notepad. https://www.techsupportall.com/file-...or-windows-xp/ http://www.techsupportall.com/downlo...ion_fix_xp.zip That will show you all the rubbish associated with the setup for that file type. In addition to the setting of Default applications for an extension like that, there is likely also a registry key for browser choice on an N SKU of Windows. The EU made Microsoft add a browserchoice dialog to Windows, so users could more easily select their favorite browser, and not have the user assume that Internet Explorer was the only option. ******* By way of one of Brinks sites, here's a Link to Kellys Korner. For example, Line 88 "Set Default Web Browser in Windows" https://web.archive.org/web/20140122.../xp_tweaks.htm And of all things, line 88 is an EXE file! stbrws14.exe 43,285 bytes SHA256: 2AD0641696CB40CF280503EBE2BF7CE56D171A2EF2EFA601EF 6ADD75807C33E9 It's supposed to look like this when you run it. http://www.pc-tools.net/images/setbrows.gif A later one, written by a guy at another one of the famous windows web sites, is this one. https://web.archive.org/web/20140121...ultbrowser.htm Paul |

FreeMan,
How is the default browser stored ? Probably not at all. Its more likely it simply infers it from looking at which program is linked to the different intarwebz related file extensions Can you imagine the different browser makers agreeing on a single registry key to store the "I'm the boss here" setting in ? I sure can't. :-) How is it hiding this ? See above. Simpelest check would be to see, in the registry, who holds the HTM extension. I change the default and still the second laptop app shows blank as the default. In that regard, what is your current check ? You didn't mention it (I'm just curious here). Regards, Rudy Wieser |
