Default WMP 11 Lags my computer up when I play a movie file

Hi, my name is Joe and I need your help. The other day I had to reformat my
hardrive. After installing all the security updates, SP2 and my graphics
drivers I downloaded and installed WMP 11. After that I installed the CCCP
codec pack. When I tried playing a .AVI file, my computer started to get
choppy, laggy and then restarted on its own. When XP started back up it said
I had a serious error. I sent in an error report, but it could not tell me
the problem. I then went on to trying other movie file formats such as: .WMV,
..MPG, .MPEG and got the same results. I've tried uninstalling the codec pack
and trying others. I've also tried re-installing WMP 11 with no luck. Just to
let you know my computer was bought back in 2004 with Windows XP SP1 and that
is what it traveled back to after the hard drive reformat. I don't know what
else to do! Any help would be much appriciated.
