Default XP startup problems

I just bought a new Dell with XP on it. I also bought a
new HP printer. The problem is that when I hook up the
USB line to the printer, the computer freezes just before
XP starts. If I unplug the USB line, XP will load. I can
then easily plug the line back in and the printer works
fine.

Ideas?

Thx,

Mike
