Default IE icon missing, desktop and display properties

I just reloaded WinXPpro sp2, ran all critical updates using "administrator"
and added 'my docs, my comp, IE, network' icons to desktop via "Control
Panel Display Desktop Customise Desktop Desktop Icons".

Now here's the problem: I added the 3 userID's that will be using this Pc,
while setting them up I did the same as "administrator" turning on desktop
icons BUT the "Internet Explorer" check box and label are missing from the
"Control Panel Display Desktop Customise Desktop Desktop Icons"
area. It's now missing using the 'adminstrator' logon also.

And here's the question: How do I get it back so that I can turn it "on /
off" using "Control Panel Display Desktop Customise Desktop Desktop
Icons"?

I used the registry hack;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\HideDe
sktopIcons\
NewStartPanel. Once there, locate
{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D} in the list on the right.
Right click on it and select Modify. Change the value equal
to 0. Reboot your computer.

to get the "IE" icon back onto my desktop but that doesn't give me back the
ability to use the "Display Properties" to make on/off changes.

Any ideas on how it vanished and how do I get it back?

Brad

I'm having the exact same problem, the checkbox and the words
"Internet Explorer" are missing from Display PropertiesDesktop
TabCustomize DesktopGeneral TabDesktop Icons. There is not much
info to be found about this problem.

I'm having the same problem on my 2 computers, and I've noticed this
since I installed November's updates from Windows Update.

Add-remove-program (select show updates)

Uninstall KB943460

This one is causing the problem.

Regards...

Michel.

Thank you, Michel, but is this behavior intentional or is a bug in the
mentioned update? Anymore info on the issue?

Ask MS! ;-) I think a BUG
I can easily replicate the problem by installing this KB hot fix (English
version)

Michel,

Thanks for the information. I was about to blame it on some business
software that I also installed.
Instead of uninstalling the Patch you can get the IE (original) icon on the
desktop by using a registry hack I mentioned in my original post. Although
I'd like to have the check box and wording returned to the "desktop
customization" area.

You can also use the Tweak UI powertoy to put/remove Internet Explorer
shortcut in the desktop.

I had spoken confirmation from MS

WORDS ARE/

Assessment

No solution for it because this is a known issue
Problem will be solved with SP3 or hopefully sooner
Asked customer to uninstall the update and wait until SP3 comes out or a new
update for this known issue

Plan

Next action customer: n/a
Next action Microsoft: n/a
Next contact: n/a

So maybe before comes a hot fix or not…

Regards,

Michel

Thanks Michael! I just noticed it the last couple days and thought
maybe one of my own scripts was causing it! LOL.

Is it just me or my imagination, but my WinXP tells me that "this update
cannot be removed". Is there a way of removing it or are we stuck with it
until MS 'maybe' decides to deal with it?

Brian,

Were you able to remove it through the std. 'add n remove' in control panel?
My machine says it can't be removed and I don't have a "remove" button to
click on.
