Winddows 10 Backup
I would like to use the backup facility in Windows 10.
I would like the backup to occur once a day at a time I specify. That way I can detach my external HD except during backups. Is not see a way to set the time. Is there one? If not, what is the (free) equivalent of what I described? Thanks. |

It's all taken care of internally by the Reflect user interface itself. I'm not as familiar with the Windows system's own backup system, known File History. Yousuf Khan |

There is no set time but history suggests that 03:00 AM is the norm but this is for Windows maintenance so change that time. http://i.imgur.com/PJKQ2w7.png http://i.imgur.com/PJKQ2w7.png If not, what is the (free) equivalent of what I described? How much are you prepared to pay for this free advice? Philo (our resident Del Boy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Del_Boy) is available in your area who can fix you up!!!!!!!!!!! I don't use Windows 10 backup but I looked through it and there is a schedule for backups, How often, day of the week and time. If you don't care for that one, I use Macrium Reflect which is a great piece of software and has a free version. Rene |

Right click the MS icon in the lower corner of the screen and select Backup Settings. Click: More Options. Advance Settings Advance Settings again (THere may be a way to only have to do it once.) Select the time period that you want the backups to occur -- 2017: The year we lean to play the great game of Euchre |

Create the profile and in the When tab you can create your schedule -- 2017: The year we lean to play the great game of Euchre |

Is not see a way to set the time. Is there one? If not, what is the (free) equivalent of what I described? Thanks. There's usually a way to do that, although the only time I use this, is when testing it for someone. https://s29.postimg.org/prya3t06v/backup.gif For example, the output to DVD option on that, will leave you begging for mercy :-) Using HDDs as the output for the backup storage, is not nearly as bad. The output is in .vhdx format. The disadvantage of that format, is mounting it for random access. The advantage of that format (an improvement over the original Win7 design that used .vhd), is that .vhdx can back up more than 2.2TB of files. If you have a 4TB drive with 3TB of files, then .vhdx is perfect for backing up such a volume. If you booted to Windows 7 and tried to back up that drive (to a .vhd image), it would fail part way through the backup. Because I'm not a fan of .vhdx, and I really like random access, I would be picking some other tool. A Macrium ..mrimg can be mounted. An Acronis .tib can be mounted. So the commercial products put more work into it. Microsoft just used their "virtual machine container formats" as a substitute for designing a new backup format. To work with .vhdx (for random access), you really need a Hyper-V instance on the PC, and that takes a CPU with SLAT or EPT. I only have one machine in the house, that I could use Hyper-V on, and I really don't like "orphan" technologies. If that machine failed to operate some day, I'd have no random access to my .vhdx collection. There is nothing wrong with the "restore" capability. If you need access to the files, the "system repair disc" allows booting and restoring the .vhdx to the physical volume content. But I really really like random access to the backup output, for cases where I just want the one file, and I'm not willing to wait nine hours (and need a spare drive) to get it. Paul |

Macrium Reflect's free version does not include backup by file and folder. EaseUS ToDo Backup does, so I will try it. Thanks. |
