install/delete problem

Somewhere a program got deleted without the using the 'add/remove
programs' in the control panel. Now I am trying to reinstall the program
but can't since it thinks it is already installed. I tried to delete
using the add/remove, but it says that it can't find it. How do I delete
all traces of the program and make the add/remove program not look for
it. TIA
