Windows Defender too slow to update
Good evening. I was trying to download the windows defender spyware
definitions but it went too slow. Did cancel, perhaps I will try another day. Do you think Windows Defender is good enough for windows 8 or is it better to install Microsoft Security Essentials? Thanks. |

You would be better off using a 3rd party free AV program. Here is a list for you. A lot of people use Avast! I have installed Panda on some friends and family computers that don't want to have to fool with any settings. http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-anti-virus-software.htm#Quick_Selection_Guide |

Windows Defender too slow to update
Thanks, I use Mcafee a lot. It doesn't slow down the system very much.

I know it's not fair to hold a grudge after 20 years but I used Norton Security Suite something like 20 years ago and it made my system crawl, loaded up all sorts of needless and useless utilities and was a nightmare to get rid of (the system ran SO much better without it and crashed a lot less). So I still will not use any Norton Product. |

Windows Defender too slow to update
Correction: I wanted to say I used to use Mcafee a lot. One time I bought
the software on store before Microsoft had Security Essentials. But then I found it was only valid for a year, then you had to pay more. So I gave up. I think it was one of the first softwares for rent I saw. In the past you could buy this AV software and update for free. "Ron" escreveu na mensagem ... Sure there are alternatives, but Avira is one of the top free AVs that you can use. Has been for years. Lavasoft Ad-Aware? I haven't used that in about 10 years. And that is not an AV program. It is to be used in addition to your AV program. Malwarebytes and Superantispware are better programs though. |

Avast seems 'good enough' according to various ratings and is easy to set up. Sneaks signatures onto NNTP posts though, which I just realised yesterday. Most advice seems to be that anti-virus is not so important as it used to be, the emphasis now seems to be malware attacks and web/browser/email threats. I read in 'Future Crimes' (http://www.futurecrimesbook.com/) that viruses/malware are produced faster than the AV industry can cope, so relying on the latest defence software to protect from threats is hopeless. |
