You mean "emigrating." I'm not sure why people have so much trouble
using that word.

No, emigrating means leaving. Immigrating means coming in. So, although
it sounds odd, what Gene said was that his grandfather came to the US.
Gene could only say that his grandfather emigrated to the United States
if he (Gene) was back in the country that his grandfather left.

Thanks, David, for pointing out Slimer's ignorance. I'm not sure why he
has so much trouble using that word :-)

My grandfather emigrated *from* Europe and immigrated *to* the US.

And "migrated" if he, Gene, were in some other country. Or even if
Gene decided not to be too specific about his current location.

So, he was an émigré then a sea-farer then an immigrant then a
settler, all the while being a migrant?
If he were the first to live in his new house at some point he could
even have been a pioneer. Truly a gentleman of many parts.

I say "sea-farer" on the politically incorrect assumption that he was
one of the many millions who migrated in the hope of a better life and
not one of those wealthy ones who flew in. If I'm correct, I do hope
ever so much that he found it.

*I* did.

He migrated before there were airplanes, so seafarer is correct :-)

Wealthy, not so much.

Europe is better because we have monuments, good fish, sun and beaches,
people are polite, we have a good health system and we are near to Asia and
Africa. America is like a big island to the left and there are sharks in the
Ocean. The winter is too cold unless you live in California, and they 250
million people with guns. Not so good for small people who don't like
fighting.

Per Malaka:
Not so good for small people who don't like
fighting.

I don't own a gun and, if my luck holds, never will.

Having said that, I would think that it's the opposite of what I
understand from your statement: i.e. Instead of gun ownership being
*bad* for small people who don't like fighting, that gun ownership is
*good* for small people who don't like fighting.

To wit, I lived in Hawaii for about 10 years a loooong time ago.
Virtually no guns there at the time, so the biggest guy had his way with
whoever he wanted. Tourist comes back to find a 375-pound local guy
rummaging through their car at the Pali Lookout? Oh well, better just
stand back and wait for them to finish.

OTOH, the prevailing wisdom was that nobody messed with Filipinos
"because those guys carried knives...".

Per Stormin' Norman:
Did you live in Hawaii before they had police and telephones? That was a long
time ago.......

Effectively, yes: no cell phones, most of the place lacked pay phones,
and, except for downtown Honolulu and Waikiki, police were an abstract
concept. They were *somewhere*, but not *there*...

And you think that you would have been justified in shooting him?

Who about calling the cops?

No, certainly not.

But they would be justified in saying "..hey stop that.. I'm going to
report you to the police.." Then if the big guy says "..no you are
not.." and tries to physically stop you from taking your car and
leaving.. when that's a different matter.

Not me... I wouldn't even *think* of carrying a firearm.

And probably not 90% of the rest of the population.

But, in light of the knife-carrying-Filipino legend, I would have to
think that he would have been at least partially deterred.... or be
accompanied by friends with superior firepower.

The realist in me leans towards #2.

People who wouldn't dream of carrying a weapon are simply people who have never
needed one, yet.

I've seen it claimed that an inexperienced person with a gun is likely
to have it taken away and used on him. Most of us would hesitate before
pulling the trigger. OTOH, as I read the news, there are lots of people
who are just waiting for an excuse to shoot someone.
