!! ugly desktop icon titles !!
===================================== Hi Touchbase.. Thanks for your effort to help out. Unfortunately it wasn't just a simple drop shadow switch. However.. what I have figured out since I first posted is that Gabrielle has set the desktop color to black and the picture she has on her desktop is a 'band' across the center.. with black 'bands' across the top and bottom of the picture. The icons and titles on the black desktop 'bands' are showing the titles OK without any problem naturally. The only area where these solid black backgrounds to the icon titles show up.. is on the area occupied by the picture. So I'm guessing that wherever the icon titles are on the picture.. somehow they punch a hole in the picture and so the desktop color shows through.. creating the impression that the titles have solid black backgrounds which 'appear' to be sitting 'on top of' the picture itself. All too technical for me. I don't bother with pictures on my desktop so I didn't twig to it till now. Having said that.. my wife also has a picture (full screen) on her desktop and her icon titles don't punch holes in that. The titles are 'transparent in that you can see the picture behind the text.. so I'm at a loss to know what is making the transparency possible on my wife's desktop and not on Gabrielle's desktop. Any other thoughts on this would be appreciated as I agree with Gabrielle in that it isn't a good look on her desktop right now : ) I'm sure if it can work on my wife's desktop it can also be made to work on Gabrielle's dt.. but where does MS hide the switch or whatever is the question. It would be a big help if MS were to have a visual adjustment section where you could go and set up screen items such as the desktop icons and titles.. instead of these text-lists with their on/off switches that you don't really have a clue what they really mean unless you're employed by MS and live their language and culture on a daily basis. Speed the day that Redmond finally figures out how to make life simple once again. Thanks Touchbase. (and anyone else who can help out here). shade$ ================================== "Touch Base" wrote: "shade$" wrote in message ... | ============== | My daughter has her own desktop/account on my computer (Win XP home O/S) and | I have four and my wife also has hers.. and somehow my daughter has created | solid black backgrounds to all her desktop icon names or titles. | | None of us has ever had this before and I can find no switch or option | anywhere that I can change her icon titles back to their 'normal' | (transparent?) mode. | | Anyone have a clue what is going on here and can guide me to where I can | make the switch from ugly back to normal mode for my daughter? | | ANY hints.. tips.. advice.. etc truly appreciated. | | Thank you.......... | from... | | shade$ | =============== Right click 'My Computer', Advanced, Performance - Click on Settings, under Visual Effects scroll down and click on 'Use drop shadows for icons on the desktop' You should be back to the look you are after. -- Touch Base Post back here on the result- good or bad |
