Default What is it with Windows * Restore system?

Why is it every once in a blue moon I run into a problem with windows
and go for a System restore point and find them all gone! even tho there
was 3 or 4 a week ago?
This happened on more than 1 machine and with Vista And Win 7 also, It
has always seem to be broken when you most need it. Thank goodness in
this case I had a Macrium Reflect image of the system only a week ago.

Thanks for any insights on this Cretin of a socalled feature.

Regards, Rene

The space to store the System Restore points comes out of
somewhere. You could start by checking the control panel,
make sure that just the necessary partitions are being
tracked. Also check the amount of space provided for
the function.

Other functions may be using the same space. It could even
be, that the act of running the Reflect backup, is flushing
the Restore points.

Thanks Paul, I was surprised when I checked my restore space as I had
set it to 10% as is usual when I install a new OS, it was back to 3% and
I can see why it did not contain my usual 3 to 5 restore points which
are about 580 MBs each And yes I set 2 poinsts yesterday 1 before and 1
after Macrium Backup and today 1 has disappeared, So it looks like you
may have hit the nail on the head again.
In the future I will watch this restore space more carefully.

Thanks, Rene

I dropped System Restore long ago, after using it once. After a
restoration it left behind too many "orphan files". Now I use Macrium
Reflect Free to image my C: drive and LaCie Backup to backup other files
like My Documents etc.

Nowadays, System Restore is one of the first things I switch off after
installing a new system. I haven't regretted it so far.

Your choice, but as far as I'm concerned, turning it off is foolhardy.

Yes, it has its weaknesses; it's far from perfect. But even though I
also use ERUNT every day, I keep System Restore running. It's another
layer of protection, and more layers of protection is better. A belt
and suspenders is better than either alone.

As Ken Blake says on occasion, "Ditto!" For me, SR is one of the first
things I disable, along with UAC, of course.

Query: ERUNT works OK under win 8? (I stopped using it after Win7, as
there are some statements in the readme file which say 'it is still
compatible with Windows 7 but...will only work if you turn off UAC'
....and ... 'a problem has been discovered on some systems causing error
with RegSaveKey:...'

Yes. No problems at all, neither with Windows 8 nor 8.1.

two cents

The author's page does not show Win8 as a supported o/s
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
- Note: The program has not been updated since 2005 (8 yrs ago)

Also see the author's FAQs
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-on.../erunt/faq.htm

A variety of forums discuss disabling UAC via a registry change for
ERUNT to Work (on Win7 and Win8)
http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php?topic=631.0
http://windowssecrets.com/forums/sho...p/147208-Erunt
http://www.sevenforums.com/backup-re...irections.html

Disabling UAC will completely eliminate the ability to use the Win8
MSFT Store thereby foregoing the ability to access the store to update
Win8 to Win8.1

ERUNT unlike System Restore is not smart enough to create a
backup/restore point prior to installing software or a driver thus it is
incumbent upon the user to create one prior to performing those actions.

If I felt it was necessary to use (or disliked) System Restore and
wanted an alternative it certainly would not be (based on the above) ERUNT.

If you choose to use ERUNT, it might be prudent to use an imaging
program (Acronis, Macrium etc.) to competely backup your system before
letting go of the horse's (System Restore) reins.

Thanks ...Winston, I had another look at ERUNT after Ken's post, and
came to the same conclusion. ERUNT is outdated, full stop. A better
option appears to be Tweaking.com's Registry backup, which uses the
Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service. I will stick to System Restore for
now, which has saved my ass more than once.

OK, by searching the net I found this info and tried it, Dual booting to
win 7 deletes all the restore points in Win8 and yes, I tried it and it
did wipe out all my points, now to find a way to prevent it.

On a dual boot system, I turn off restore points in *one*
of the two OSes. And that prevents the problem. That's why restore points
are turned off in WinXP here, so that won't happen.
