Slow Desktop Load
Ian, check here for virus, trojans and spyware. You can use these
sites. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ http://security.kolla.de/news.php?lang=en http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ "Ian Deutsch" wrote in message ... First, system specs: P4 2.8 HT 1.5GB DDR 433 Ram (dual channel 2x512, 2x256) 2 120 GB SATA HD's in RAID 0 config MSI Geforce FX 5900 Ultra on a Gigabyte 8KNXP board Ok, I did a clean install of Windows XP Pro Corporate with slipstreamed SP1. Then I installed all the latest drivers. Afterwards I installed NAV 8.0 Corp and Office 2003 Pro. (If questioning legitimacy of software, I'm a Drexel University student and we get all this software) I went on to install my normal basic software (trillian 2.0, winamp 5, etc). After all of this my computer seems to take forever to load the desktop. It will get past all the other stuff quickly, play the startup sound and all, but then sit on a screen just showing my desktop background. During this time the Ctrl-Alt-Del interrupt keys do not do anything. Eventually explorer loads and everything is fine. I have about 1.1 gb of free ram after boot, page file never sees any use. To troubleshoot I have done the following: Turned off NAV scanning of network drives Turned off the page file (somehow having 1.5gb of ram allows me to do this now) Turned off system restore (actually I always leave that off) Turned off drive indexing Ran defrag (said it didn't need it, but ran anyway) Ran Scandisk (no errors found) I never have anything load on startup, aside from NAV Another note is that sometimes, explorer.exe will cause an error and cause it to close and then reload. I'm still working on narrowing down that problem, but not sure if it could be related. What could I be missing? |
