In order to use Spell Check in Outlook Express, one must install either
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works, or Microsoft Office. These software
programs are available for purchase at your favorite store that sells computer
software programs.

If you have one of the aforementioned programs installed,
then visit the following website for assistance:

Default my spell check on outlook express does not work

Greetings --

Outlook Express, as you've just discovered, has no spell-checking
capabilities of its own. Instead, it relies upon the presence of
other Microsoft applications, such as the Office Suite, Word, or the
Works _Suite_ (which includes Word, not the regular Works). There are
also some 3rd-party shareware/freeware solutions available at any of
the many shareware sites on the Internet

Spell Magic seems well thought-of, though I haven't tried it myself:

Neither Windows XP, nor any other version of Windows, has ever
come with a Spell Checking facility. Outlook Express uses the
spell checker that comes with Microsoft Word, (or another
Microsoft Office program) if you have it installed.

If you don't have Word or Office installed, you probably don't
have a spell checker. However there are several downloadable
freeware/shareware alternative spell checkers that work with
Outlook Express and Outlook. Since I have no personal experience
with any of these, I'll let someone else recommend one.

On the other hand, if a Microsoft Office component *is*
installed, try the instructions at

As Ken suggested you need at least one Microsoft stuff that comes with
a spell checker (for example, Word) to lend its spell checker to
Outlook Express.
If you don't have any, then check out As-U-Type
(http://www.asutype.com). It checks and corrects spelling as you type
in Outlook Express, Internet Explorer and ALL other software that you
have in your computer (no exception). Very easy to install and use;
and you can even try it for free...
