I need a data transfer cable for Windows 7 64-bit
I currently have an XP Home PC and I'm about to take ownership of a brand
new Windows 7 64-bit PC. Could anyone recommend a data transfer cable suitable for connecting the two and transfering disk contents? Most of the ones I've seen on sale seem to be for Vista or XP...will they work with Windows 7 64-bit? Cheers, Tim

If so then it is independent of your operating system. It works for a DOS machine and it works for a Win7 64-bit machine. It's like your mobile phone: You can use it to converse in English or in Chinese - it does not matter.

I meant a cable - usually USB2.0 - for connecting two PCs and transferring

No, your original post was not self-explanatory. These days the vast
majority of PC-to-PC connections are made with a CAT5 cable (= a network cable), if only because all modern PCs have an inbuilt RJ45 port and because networking software is included in all current versions of Windows. There is no need to buy anything other than the cable itself (which may have to be a cross-over cable). How do connect your PC to the Internet? Dial-up modem? ADSL? Through a router? Cable modem? The thing in the middle of the cable, contains one of these chips. This kind of "ping-pong" chip is what makes it possible to violate the notion of not being allowed to make direct host to host USB connections. That may have changed, but I don't know where I'd find evidence of that. The brochure implies some aspect of support for that USB-USB transfer cable, is supported in the latest Windows OSes. But it isn't clear whether that support is just driver level, driver and application, or just application level. The hardware cable they mention, was developed well before Microsoft became interested. Custom drivers used to be used to make Prolific and a couple other chips, work. One company may have been flagged on a patent violation, when they delivered their chip. That assumes the provided installation CD works properly (or that the Windows package does it all). If the installation CD didn't work, then the difference would be, that nobody can help you. At least if you're working with Ethernet, a broken networking setup may be fixable. Drivers for Ethernet are very good, and cover the widest range of operating systems. At least, compared to other kinds of hardware. Consumers generally search for that USB transfer cable, when all other interfaces are not available. So it isn't the solution of first choice. They are only a few dollars and will work with almost any operating systems. Alternatively, if you have, or want to buy, a router, buy two CAT5 cables (one to connect each computer to the router), but be sure that they are *not* of the crossover type. And as a second alternative (and the easiest to do) instead of connecting the two computer, either burn the files you want to transfer to CDs or DVDs, or copy them to a thumb drive. The thumb drive is the easiest device to use, and if you don't have one, buy one (they are inexpensive) and will likely come in handy for future uses too. One more point, regarding what files you can transfer, you say "disk contents," but you need to be aware that transferring it all won't do you any good. You can transfer data files of all types--word processing, spreadsheet, text, music, photos, graphics, etc. However, with very few exceptions, you can *not* transfer installed programs. Better to just remove the hard drive from the old machine and mount it, temporarily if need be, in the new machine. Copy to your heart's content at a MUCH faster rate than cables or intermediate thumb drives.
