Default hard drive stopped working

On a desktop pc,youre best bet would be to buy a new hd from a pc shop,
install xp on new, once completed, plug in old hd as slave, access the hd &
retrieve data.If its other than desktop, remove hd & install it to another
pc,if
connections are diffrent,a good pc shop would have adapter to connect it.
Some hds as with any hardware wears out in time,if it still operates at some
level,the data "might" be retrievable...

Connect the bad HD as a slave to the computer after putting in a new drive. Then you
will be able to pull off any necessary Data or pictures. Alternately you can also
purchase a USB enclosure for the bad drive and do the same as above

And a final alternative assuming even when connected as a slave drive its
unreconniseable, is to send the drive to a data recovery specialist, and be
prepared to spend much $$$$ on data recovery.
In future look into data backup procedures / options
