If you hit the Windows key, then press Q, then you will be able to find
a sound recorder. It wuz always a dinky little thing, defaulting to 22
kilosamples per second, mono, sixteen bit. Switch it up to 44.1
kilosamples per second, and it did the job, though. If I want to record
more than sixty seconds, I just let it run for fifteen s, cut the speed
in half a few times, and start again from the beginning. It featured
several format options, including MP3.

C:\soxedit sox.txt
'edit' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

C:\soxnotepad sox.txt

C:\sox(notepad ****S UP line feeds)

The new version? It'll probably record forever, and it only duz WMA.
That iz the only format that Sound Exchange duz not do. I hav no idea
whether that iz lossless WMA, or what my sampling rate iz. It won't do
reverse. It won't add echo. It won't downspeed. I only used the reverse
once, and the reverb in other programs is more realistic and flexible.

WAY TOO DINKY!

EDIT.COM is a 16-bit program and is included in all 32-bit Windows,
including Windows 8. It has never been included with any 64-bit
Windows.

There are lots of other audio recorders in the world. Try the free
Audacity.

I *wuz* going to say that it's not dinky enough, and once I turn off all
of the toolbars it just might work for what I want to do. It's a pain in
the ass to turn off all of the toolbars, and I might only be doing that
once. Sigh. I've made a mess of my menus in Audacity, and I do not know
how to reset it. GONE!

You get what you pay for. It's free.

I am in the habit of making stereo vocals with a synthesizer reference.
I will probably use WaveEdit in Ahead Nero Six (I am planning on a
Windows 98 installation under Oracle's VirtualBox, because my Nero Ten
serial number won't work). I set the stereo processor in WaveEdit to
silence one side, during one recording, then the other; two windows of
SNDREC32 on top of WaveEdit. Wish me luck, because my Win98 SE disk iz
scratched.

Okay, maybe I will giv Audacity another chance. After all, it switches
my audio card between stereo and mono, and I did not know that it *did*
stereo.

The Wikipedia article says, that to avoid WMA recording, try this.
You would do this in a command prompt window.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sndrec32

soundrecorder /file outputfile.wav

It's still not a good program though, because of all the other
features that did not get implemented.

You can find SNDREC32 from Windows XP Mode package from Microsoft (about
470MB):

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...s.aspx?id=8002

The "WindowsXPMode_N_en-us.exe" is, I think, the N edition that doesn't
include Windows Media player. But since I don't know if it includes all the
games like in standard edition, I suggest you get the
"WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe" file. Just to make sure.

Once downloaded, manually extract the installer files (into Desktop) from
the command prompt using this command line:

WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe /extract:"%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\WindowsXPMode"

Once extracted, open the "WindowsXPMode" folder, then the "sources" folder.

Rename "xpm" file to "xpm.cab". CAB file is an archive like ZIP.

Double-click "xpm.cab" to browse its contents.

Copy the "VirtualXPVHD" file into Desktop.

Once it's done, rename the "VirtualXPVHD" file on the Desktop to
"VirtualXP.vhd". VHD file is a virtual hard disk image. In that VHD file,
the "SNDREC32.EXE" is at "Windows\System32\sndrec32.exe".

You can extract the "SNDREC32.EXE" by first mounting the VHD file to a new
drive letter, copy the file, then when all is done, unmount it. Or more
simpler, use 7-Zip to extract the file.

Check the program by running it. It should work.

When everything's good, the "WindowsXPMode" folder and the VHD file on the
Desktop, and the "WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe" file can be deleted.

I wiL keep this in mind for running winfract. The advertizing on this
system is ****ing me off, though, and so iz the fact that my
mouse-touchpad activates the "start" menus when it's in the middle of
the screen, and I often end up in some application (not a window, either
--fullscreen crap) that I did not start, so I might dump Win8
altogether. My hard drive is an SSD clone of the orijinal equipment, so
I could always go back to this noise if I ever want to run something
that's win8-only. I mentioned Nero 6 WaveEdit. The timing adjustments in
it stop working properly about when SP3 starts downloading. It works
just fine under 98.

I *don't* think this iz going to work, today. I am having trouble with
VirtualBox, too. I will take a stab at their pre-made VMs.

Oh jeez. I mentioned winfract, and there's a TON of noise about where to
get it.
