Yep, you're pretty good (and concise) with answers on IT topics Paul,
but just to bring you back to earth a bit, your English language skills
may need a bit of honing. The 'brass monkey' is no animal; in the days
of the old man o' war sailing ships the cannon balls were stored on a
frame (made of brass) called a 'monkey', and in cold weather that frame
would shrink, and some of the cannon ball would pop off.
hence, 'freeze the balls off a brass monkey'.

Good info which I am sure very people know!

Yeah, he got me on that one. I wasn't aware of the history.
Here, it's just a figure of speech, something from the school yard.

Here in Australia we've just had 2 weeks straight of +44C to 45C temps.
Geez, I can't even begin to imagine what -26C feels like.
(but it sounds good from where I'm sitting) :-)

We live in a time of extremes, that's for sure.
Right now, it's +6C in Whitehorse Yukon, and -4C in
Louisiana near the Gulf of Mexico, with light snow.
How's that for an inversion.

I can't imagine what +44C would be like, in the outdoors.
Maybe 35C would be a hot day here in the summer. The worst
part here, is getting high humidity at the same time.
I don't mind the 35C, as long as it isn't 90% humidity
at the same time. I can remember summers here, where it
wasn't really that hot, but all of August was "like an armpit"
in terms of humidity. And I don't handle humidity all that
well. I sweat buckets, when other people are only
slightly damp. Not good. I have to drag several liters
of water to sporting events.

Paul

That's the only up-side to temps in the high 40's, the humidity is
usually very low, like down to around 5% - 10%. So as long as you keep
out of direct sun & drink enough water, the heat is bearable.

I seriously hate travelling to Brisbane - the humidity is usually way
high summer & winter. I feel like my brain is gone all soggy. Like
yourself I don't handle humid that well. I know I probably couldn't
live in tropical areas.

Incredible to hear the Louisiana has such low temps.
Two years ago Jan/Feb 2012, we had more rain & flooding in our area,
than has ever been seen by white man.

2 years later - we are in the grip of (probably) the worst drought on
record. No rain, no feed for stock, - and cattle growers have had to
shoot their cattle in desperation. And in several cases, they have
turned the gun on themselves. :-( Tragic stuff.

Definately extreme times.

Take care.

HA!

Something like that has sometimes occurred to me as well. He's so
consistent, so good, and his attitude is always mature; filled with the
kind of higher vantage-point outlook that comes from having been at the
top for quite a long time.
He never gets into petty arguments; never gets dragged down; never
loses the grace that's a sign of great self-assurance.

Good luck to you, Paul. You're an example to us all.

Thanks for posting that. I've known that "urban legend" for decades,
and had always assumed it was true.

Interesting how so often..."discoveries" are just legend.

There was one going around that I believed:

Most of the dust in your house is composed of shed skin.
Turned out that was an urban legend as well.

I found this

and when you think about it, if a house or room is uninhabited, it still
gets dusty.

Hi, Philo.

Thanks for that link. Snopes agrees with Wikipedia on this:

I don't ever recall anything I have ever read on Wikipedia that was way
off of the mark. But I have found once in awhile, Snopes hardly had done
much research on the subject at all. And then comes to the wrong
conclusion.

So I did research on who runs Snopes. And it sounds like it is only a
couple that lives in an ivory tower and that is it.

BTW, in my world it's always been "freeze the *nuts* off a brass
monkey", presumably a reference to how the parts of a brass monkey
(i.e., a brass statue of a simian) might be held together.

Either way, your temperatures are chilly :-)

I'm in Si Valley, where temperatures rarely get more that a degree or
two below 0 C. I've lived in colder climes, however...

Some people live above the law. I am sure you could think of examples of
some that can do things that you or I could never get away with. :-(
