battery will not charge

I am using a 1 year old HP laptop running W7 home premium. As of
yesterday I noticed that when I am plugged in and hover my mouse of the
battery icon it says I am "plugged in-not charging".

I can find no setting where I may have inadvertently switched off
battery charging. Finally I discovered that if I remove the battery and
immediately put it back in I get "plugged in-charging". The battery
charges fully and runs over 2 hours which is about normal for it.

What concerns me is that I still get the "plugged in-not charging" when
I plug power in after the battery has run low and again this is resolved
by removing and re-inserting the battery.

Not usre if this is a battery problem or a problem with the charging
circuitry. I ran the command
powercfg -energy -output c:\energy-report.html
and got (among other things):

Battery ID Hewlett-PackardPrimary
Manufacturer Hewlett-Packard
Serial Number
Chemistry LION
Long Term 1
Design Capacity 47520

This suggests that there is something wrong with the connection in your
laptop. There are no switches that one can switch on/off as far as
battery charging is concerned.

My advice is to contact HP tech support, since it's a problem with
their hardware or software.

These days (21st century), laptop batteries have a chip inside used for
communication with the laptop. I wouldn't be surprised if the problem
lay there.

Thank you everybody. I cleaned the battery contacts and it's now back to
working correctly. So I'll keep my fingers crossed and my eye on it
especially since it is out of warranty. Will also check out the above link.

1) leave windows operating.
2) pull out the battery
3) unplug the power.
4) install the battery.
5) plug in the power.
6) restart windows.

you may have to do this a second time.

With Li Batteries
If the battery voltage is too low, the battery minder may prevent
charging.Basically,one side of the battery is disconnected from the
usual output connection by the battery minder. The reset/recovery method
I last used was to connect a DVM to (across) the battery output lead
that was switched off and the battery minder leads that went to the
actual battery output lead. This was after recharging the battery to the
nominal voltage via the "real" battery output leads.
