Default CD ROM disappear while logged on

I have a constant problem (shared by many other people in
the same office) with the plain internal cd rom drives
just disappearing at times from the machine.

The error in the eventlog is

The device 'E-IDE CD-ROM 56X/AKH' (IDE\CdRomE-IDE_CD-
ROM_56X/AKH____________________A80_____\5&12e42308&0&0.0.0 )
disappeared from the system without first being prepared
for removal.

but this is an internal cd rom and cannot be pulled out
while the machine is on. Sometimes it helps to reboot and
the drive would be picked up again but other times it just
stay 'gone' and we have to reboot dozen of times for it to
work.

It seems to happen most often when the machine was very
busy at the time and something was being read from the cd
rom. Once it disappeared the power to the drive is also
cut off and the only way to get a disk frominside is to
manually force it open (paperclip trick).

Any ideas?

Thanks

Rudolf
