Hidden Device

How do I remove a hidden hardware which has been fisically
removed from the machine but the software is still present
and therefore conflicting with the new one.
In Windows 2000 pro there is "Add/Remove Hardware" program
in the control panel which allows the removal of such
hidden devices but in the WinXP there is only Add a new
Hardware which can be found in the control panel.

Looking forward for an answer.
