Default Tools menu in WORD gone

Hi
I use the menu "Tools" often. But what happen now I never thought possible.

I clicked on Tools to open it but instead a tiny box, the size of the word
Tools appeared under my mouse and when I clicked it, instead of opening the
tools menu,
the entire thing with the menu Tools word is gone. I can't find it.

I right clicked the menu bar and got the "Customize" window where it tells
me to highlight and drag the word menu to the bar but it will not do it.

Does anyone know where to find the menu "Tools" and how to restore it?

Many thanks
Janet

I am so sorry Leonard, here are the details:

I have Window XP PRO
I use office 2003
I lost the word TOOLS on the menu bar of the WORD page.
This word used to open for me a long and full list of things that I have no
access to now.
Hope you can help :-)
Many thanks
Janet

The option you seek is under Tools / customise

You need to select the area/tab that allows you to see all the menu items
and not just last used items on the menu.

I have Word 2007 so I can't tell you exactly where this is or what it's
called

Default Tools menu in WORD gone

It sounds like you were trying to drag and drop from the left-hand part of
the dialog box, headed "Categories" (containing File, Edit, View, Insert
etc); you can only drag from the right-hand part, "Commands" (New..., New,
New |, New Web Page, etc).

If you haven't customised your menu bar, the quickest thing might be to
reset it (resetting will lose your customisations). To do that, do the
right-click Customize bit you've described but then choose the leftmost
tab along the top, "Toolbars". Click once on "Menu Bar" to select it (it
highlights - don't worry about the ticks, they're just for what displays in
Word) then click on the "Reset..." button on the right. I think it prompts
you to confirm that you do indeed want to do this (not 100% sure as I'm not
going to try it myself!). Say yes, OK/Close your way out. This should set it
back to how you want.

If you're experiencing what I think TaurArian is describing (and I'm not
sure it is), and want "to see all the menu items and not just last used
items on the menu", then when you click on the word "Tools" you should see
a double-ended downward-pointing arrow at the bottom of the list of items
that does appear. Hovering your mouse over this will expand the list to show
all items. To fix this, do the right-click Customize but choose the
rightmost tab, "Options", select "Always show full menus", and OK your way
back out.

It might be worth noting that if you have Word open but no *document* open,
many items in the lists under Menu items are greyed out anyway, including
"Options" under "Tools".

For future reference, this group is for problems with Windows XP itself, and
Word isn't part of the XP operating system (although often bundled with new
PCs). If you have any more issues with Word, you would be better off posting
in one of the dedicated Word groups such as microsoft.public.word.newusers.
(That said, feel free to reply to this post if you have further questions on
this particular issue - I'll reply if I can!)

Hope this all helps.

Default Tools menu in WORD gone

Hello
I was not trying to drag and drop. I never need nor do such courageous
things...:-)
I was only trying to open the TOOLS menu, something I do many times. But I
may have inadvertently done it with the right instead of the left click.
The result was that the word TOOLS became a tiny removable box, it got stuck
to the mouse arrow, and when I tried to click it, it was gone.
I did all I know to find it, include all your instructions here, but all
instructions start with going into the TOOL menu, and I have no TOOL menu so
I can proceed in any direction.

I want to do something completely different this time, RE-INSTALL Office
2003 from my original disc which is now 5 years old and never been used
after original installation. Questions:
1) Do I have first to remove the existing Office 2003 or I can install it
on top of it?
2) And if I must delete first the old Office in order to install it ANEW,
A) then how to do that,
B) and what are the side effects of such a deep surgery?

Many thanks for a reply
Janet

Default Tools menu in WORD gone

You need to be asking your questions in an Office or Word newsgroup where
the experts hang out.

: Hello
: I was not trying to drag and drop. I never need nor do such courageous
: things...:-)
: I was only trying to open the TOOLS menu, something I do many times. But
I
: may have inadvertently done it with the right instead of the left click.
: The result was that the word TOOLS became a tiny removable box, it got
stuck
: to the mouse arrow, and when I tried to click it, it was gone.
: I did all I know to find it, include all your instructions here, but all
: instructions start with going into the TOOL menu, and I have no TOOL menu
so
: I can proceed in any direction.
:
: I want to do something completely different this time, RE-INSTALL Office
: 2003 from my original disc which is now 5 years old and never been used
: after original installation. Questions:
: 1) Do I have first to remove the existing Office 2003 or I can install it
: on top of it?
: 2) And if I must delete first the old Office in order to install it ANEW,
: A) then how to do that,
: B) and what are the side effects of such a deep surgery?
:
: Many thanks for a reply

: It sounds like you were trying to drag and drop from the left-hand part
of
: the dialog box, headed "Categories" (containing File, Edit, View, Insert
: etc); you can only drag from the right-hand part, "Commands" (New...,
New,
: New |, New Web Page, etc).
:
: If you haven't customised your menu bar, the quickest thing might be to
: reset it (resetting will lose your customisations). To do that, do the
: right-click Customize bit you've described but then choose the
leftmost
: tab along the top, "Toolbars". Click once on "Menu Bar" to select it (it
: highlights - don't worry about the ticks, they're just for what displays
: in Word) then click on the "Reset..." button on the right. I think it
: prompts you to confirm that you do indeed want to do this (not 100% sure
: as I'm not going to try it myself!). Say yes, OK/Close your way out.
This
: should set it back to how you want.
:
: If you're experiencing what I think TaurArian is describing (and I'm not
: sure it is), and want "to see all the menu items and not just last used
: items on the menu", then when you click on the word "Tools" you should
: see a double-ended downward-pointing arrow at the bottom of the list of
: items that does appear. Hovering your mouse over this will expand the
list
: to show all items. To fix this, do the right-click Customize but
choose
: the rightmost tab, "Options", select "Always show full menus", and OK
your
: way back out.
:
: It might be worth noting that if you have Word open but no *document*
: open, many items in the lists under Menu items are greyed out anyway,
: including "Options" under "Tools".
:
: For future reference, this group is for problems with Windows XP itself,
: and Word isn't part of the XP operating system (although often bundled
: with new PCs). If you have any more issues with Word, you would be
better
: off posting in one of the dedicated Word groups such as
: microsoft.public.word.newusers. (That said, feel free to reply to this
: post if you have further questions on this particular issue - I'll reply
: if I can!)
:
: Hope this all helps.

: Hi
: I use the menu "Tools" often. But what happen now I never thought
: possible.
: I clicked on Tools to open it but instead a tiny box, the size of the
: word Tools appeared under my mouse and when I clicked it, instead of
: opening the tools menu,
: the entire thing with the menu Tools word is gone. I can't find it.
:
: I right clicked the menu bar and got the "Customize" window where it
: tells me to highlight and drag the word menu to the bar but it will
: not do it.
: Does anyone know where to find the menu "Tools" and how to restore it?
:
: Many thanks
: Janet
