To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type: SFC /SCANNOW

What does it do? I tried it but i was asked to include the Win XP Pro CD. I
dont think i have that cause it was already installed in the laptop. All i
have is the Product Recovery CD and Recovery Companion CD.

SFC knows the 'install path' of the setup media. You might have to press 'r'
for retry a number of times to get it to see and copy each damaged file. It
is likely you have many. As difficult as that may be, you don't seem aware
of a way to do more than a provided Recovery, which would lose data.
