Upgrade to Windows 7
JS wrote:
You don't need to do a clean install to upgrade XP to Windows 7. Microsoft supports an "In Place" upgrade from XP to Vista. Microsoft also supports an "In Place" upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. XP --- Vista --- Windows 7. I've done it and it works! Just be aware that XP applications not supported by Vista will most certainly not be supported in Windows 7. Also per Microsoft Marketing, your XP key code will be retired and can not be activated via the Internet or Phone. This I have not confirmed. And if I do not like Win7, You are saying Microsoft will stop me from going Back to XP ? I Do not think this is True. If it is The LAWYERS will be Standing in line ! |

Upgrade to Windows 7
Whaddya think, we've got CrystalBalls? If you read the references I cited
carefully, you'd know that you're really doing a clean install (with your XP data archived but without formatting the HDD) when "upgrading" (using a Win7 Upgrade disk) from WinXP to Win7. Given suitable hardware, etc., you could do a clean install of Win7 on a computer currently running Win98...but you'd have to format the HDD first and use a Win7 Retail disk. Assuming suitable hardware, you should be able to format & do a clean install of "Win8" when it's released, too. I am posting what a Microsoft marketing person told me. Is it the truth, I can't say that it is or is not. I will know more when I find the time to sacrifice one my XP product keys. Is the key invalid the second you upgrade or do they give a day or to or multiple tries if an upgrade fails is also a big question. -- JS http://www.pagestart.com |

Upgrade to Windows 7
I downloaded the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor today, and
ZoneAlarm Extreme Security promptly labelled it as malicious. Naturally, I won't be running it any time soon. I've messaged Microsoft about this, but so far (about 12 hours later) have had no response other than an automated receipt. |

I've messaged Microsoft about this, but so far (about 12 hours later) have had no response other than an automated receipt. I don't think that Win7 UA is malicious, just incredibly poorly written. I tried to run it for over two months flying blind, so to speak. I could find no instructions anywhere; one time I let it run for 14 hours--yes, fourteen--and Task Mgr showed it still running. Finally, someone at IBM told me that I needed to erase all temp files, reboot, and try again. Finally it ran to completion, but it showed no hint of any output. I looked at all the temp files that it generated, and there was the report. Now here's the kicker: the first thing it said was that it was OK to go on my machine; the second and third things were that my hard drive controller was incompatible. Yeah, good to go--if I want to use CDR and DVDR for everything. I don't think that anyone writing malware would have turned out anything that bad--jut an idiot (or a committee of idiots). Malware Satans want their programs to run without a hitch. Incidentally, I ordered the W7 upgrade, being sure that my 14-month-Dell Inspiron 531 would handle it. Bill Gates, where are you? Allen |

Upgrade to Windows 7
Will finally see a file system change from NTFS
Will see a 128 Bit version Will see major changes in how OS interfaces to upcoming 8 and 16 core processors. Will be busy with next Vista Service Patch Will be busy with first Windows 7 service patch Corporate IT types never really adopted Vista in a large way and it take at least two fiscal years before they have the budget to move to Windows 7, so if Windows 8 comes out too soon it might dampen any move to 7. Microsoft needs time to recoup their investment in 7 so why kill off what could be the real successor to XP. And that's just to name a few reasons -- JS http://www.pagestart.com "Bob I" wrote in message ... JS wrote: "Bill Cunningham" wrote in message ... "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote in message ... Upgrade to Windows 7
JS wrote: Will finally see a file system change from NTFS That was dropped for Vista-Win 7, but I suspect most of the work is already done. Will see a 128 Bit version 64 bit was introduced for XP Will see major changes in how OS interfaces to upcoming 8 and 16 core processors. Will be busy with next Vista Service Patch Will be busy with first Windows 7 service patch And the same was done for NT 4 and Windows 2000 while XP was in the works. Corporate IT types never really adopted Vista in a large way and it take at least two fiscal years before they have the budget to move to Windows 7, so if Windows 8 comes out too soon it might dampen any move to 7. Vista's forte was more along the lines of the Consumer side of the ledger. It didn't have much in the way of business "must haves". But with XP being so old now, we will see a big switch from XP to Win 7. Microsoft needs time to recoup their investment in 7 so why kill off what could be the real successor to XP. They won't kill it off, but I see 8 coming out in 2 or 3 years but only 4 years at very latest if things really go awry. And that's just to name a few reasons |
