Default Windows XP SP3 on CD?

Nepatsfan

True especially when there is reluctance by many to upgrade to Vista.

I thought sales of XP were to stop on 30 June 2008. Today I was told by
computer outlet that they thought Microsoft had changed their mind on
this. Certainly their supplier of generic OEM copies had not told them
they would be stopping supplies. Have Microsoft done another U turn?

I'll go out on a limb here and predict a few things that you can
expect when they do offer SP3 on CD. First, I don't think it will be
free like the SP2 CD was. Second, they'll try to steer those who
will be updating multiple computers to the site where they can
download the .iso file. The CD that is created from that file is
similar to the one they shipped for SP2. In fact, the first two
screens that appear when the CD autoplays are nearly identical.

I haven't seen anything to make me think they've reversed direction. That said,
I wouldn't be shocked if they decided to extend the availability of XP again.

Default Windows XP SP3 on CD?

Ken answered the question perfectly. If you are interested in creating a
slipstreamed XP CD with SP 3 here are a couple of resources which are
immensely valuable:

Below is a link to Paul Thurrott's website. He's been around for years, and
IIRC, he is, or was an MS MVP.

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...slipstream.asp

Here's a link to Autostreamer. I used this to slipstream the XP CD with SP
2 when SP 2 was released.

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...oad-13918.html

BTW, I have Retail versions of XP Pro. I assume Autostreamer works with OEM
versions of XP, but I have no personal experience with slipstreaming OEM
versions.

Slipstreamed XP CDs save huge amounts of time if you have to reinstall XP,
or perform a recovery through the XP installation interface in order to boot
your PC.

Do you see Nepatsfan's statement, "For those who are looking to create a

That's why I wanted the ISO file or a link to order an XP SP2 CD.

What you downloaded from the Update Catalog is the full service pack.
That file is also available through this web site. Note the same
warning.

Microsoft would prefer users obtain SP3 for their computers through
Windows Update. For those who are looking to create a slipstreamed
installation CD, they'll need the full service pack file.

I saw the following note on the location you give which caused me to
continue searching until I found the location I gave in my earlier
posting.

DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A
smaller, more appropriate download for individual users is now
available on Windows Update. The best way to ensure you get Windows XP
Service Pack 3 is by turning on the Automatic Updates feature in
Windows XP. You can use our step-by-step instructions or, if you
prefer, let us do it for you.

It was worth every penny. I had neighbors running XP who had no idea what
SP 2 was. I was able to take that SP 2 CD to their homes and upgrade their
PCs, which had legal versions of XP on them.

Some didn't even have anti-virus programs or firewalls installed. I took
care of that for them as well.

Nevertheless it must have been a very expensive exercise. Of course XP
Microsoft was getting a very bad press at the time over the collossal
number of security vulnerabilities built into the operating system.

That free distribution was in the fall of 2004, and was done by mail
order only. The really expensive free distribution was done in Feb
2004. It was a security update which included SP1a and all subsequent
updates to the late fall of 2003. It was distributed by mail, and by the
millions to
be available at computer and software outlets. Places like BestBuy
and Staples had boxes of them at the checkouts. This was to address
security issues compounded by the fact that many XP users had not
installed SP1 or any security updates. It was sort of like a mass
innoculation.

Not true. Use the burn to disc function of your burning software. The
resulting cd autoruns when it is inserted in a drive and puts up a splash
screen on which you click to install.

Just a note to say I tried this twice, both with MS downloader and
another. MS connection broke several times and had to restart. Guess
there is no Resume feature.
I then tried another d/ler pgm and got to 99& twice, then it froze both
times.
Is this a constant problem?

Go to KB322389. There is a section on how to get a CD for your region.
Unfortunately it is not free this time. $3.99 + $5.99 shipping. Or you can
use one of the download suggestions mentioned already.

But it's worth pointing out that this will be a CD with JUST SP3 on; it
won't be usable to reinstall anything immediately after a format, as Rainy
seems to want to do. Of course, if a reformat should prove necessary, it can
be used to install the service pack once XP has been reinstalled from a
separate disc, or it can be used to create a slipstreamed install disc.
