VM is your swap file on the hard drive:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307886/en-us
shows how to customize this. Whenever in doubt
check the option "Let Windows manage this."

Thanks for your reply
I have 512 MB RAM
My min setting is 768 MB and Max is 1536 MB
Which is approx 1.5 and 3 times the RAM size as recommended
Should I change these?

Do you have plenty of free disk space? You can set a larger maximum
pagefile but it is normally better to add RAM. Accessing RAM is quicker
than accessing the pagefile.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Hope this helps.

When I looked for Performance Maintenance on Control panel it was not
there
There was a maintenance item but this did not show the items which should
have been there as indicated by Performance & Maintenance
