Simple to use firewall for Windows 8 64-bit?
My main concern is just making sure programs don't access the
Internet without my permission. |

And there is no mention of whether the Windows 8 firewall is similar enough for this to work. http://www.addictivetips.com/windows...nd-protection/ Looking at the advertising, perhaps the "Free" edition is good enough. I'm guessing "Applications Protection Incoming/Outgoing" is essentially the feature that will present a notification. http://www.sphinx-soft.com/Vista/order.html I'd back up your system, give the free version a try, and see how well it works. If it makes a mess, blow it away. There are complicated commercial products with over-the-top feature sets, that can also notify on outgoing, but you'll need Professor Frink to test them, and they cost money. Paul |

Thanks. a NAT router and the built in Windows firewall in addition to safe hex should be enough, but if you really 3rd party firewall, I'd go with zonealarm, pretty easy to use, comodo is the best software firewall IMO, but it can get a little complicated at times. |

A "NAT router and the built in Windows firewall in addition to safe hex"
is in no way "easy" or "simple". -- usenetopian LovelyandPretty null.null wrote: Path: eternal-september.org!news.eternal-september.org!feeder.eternal-september.org!aioe.org!.POSTED!not-for-mail From: usenetopian LovelyandPretty null.null Newsgroups: alt.comp.os.windows-8 Subject: Simple to use firewall for Windows 8 64-bit? Is there an easy to use simple firewall for Windows 864 bit? I've been using Online Armor Free 7.x for some time now. It's not only a firewall, but it offers HIPS as well. Haven't used it myself, but I've read good comments (and free as well): Privatefirewall. -- s|b |

Hi John, I agree completely. Problem with a router: the original poster wants to control his outbound programs as well. Can't do that with an external router and/or firewall. I think the poster would be best served with your suggestions for 3rd party software firewalls. But, he should use an External Firewall too. Both of those 3rd part firewalls (all Windows firewall I have found) leak like sieves. Best to put up several fences. By the way, a real (external) firewall, as opposed to a NAT router, will stop network funny business much better. I am partial to Watch Guard. I have used Sonic Wall, but they are just so very, very weird: all configuration are asked in terms of double negatives. Pull your hair out trying to figure out what they are asking. -T |

Hi John, I agree completely. I think you meant to say that you agree with usenetopian. Problem with a router: the original poster wants to control his outbound programs as well. Can't do that with an external router and/or firewall. Of course you can, and probably much more securely even. I think you misspoke because I know that you know that. By the way, a real (external) firewall, as opposed to a NAT router, will stop network funny business much better. There you go. Much better! |

With an external firewall, you can control the outbound ports. If a particular programs uses a unique port, then you can stop it dead. If it uses a common port, then you stop everyone that uses that port. (The bad guys love to use port 80 for that very reason.) To control what programs use what network resource, you need a software firewall that resided on the computer that is generating the traffic. -T |
