Ok, so I have some files that are in blue and some that are in black. What's
the difference? None are marked as read only.

No better time to learn how to use Google than the present... ;-)

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

A Google search for: "Windows XP" black and blue filenames
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...ue+fil enames

One of the first hits I read through got me this answer:

Black = uncompressed / unencrypted
Blue = NTFS compressed
Green = EFS encrypted

Are you referring to the color of the text? If so, what file name is blue
colored?

Black is normal, blue is compressed and green is encrypted.
WinXP automatically compresses files that do not get used frequently.
You can alter this if desired in Windows Explorer-Tools-Folder
Options-View - "Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color"
