Default XP "Send To" folder not working

The "Send To" item in Windows Explorer's right click context menu does NOT show
all the items in the Send To folder. It does show some other items that I have
added but no longer shows "Notepad" (though it did at one time) or any other
newly added items!!

I have seen a referance to a regestery fix (Send to Fix.reg) which I tried but I
still canot add new items.

Any Suggestions?

FWIIW here is the .reg file contents;

*****
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.DeskLink]
@="CLSID\\{9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE}"

Make sure the file/folder in the SendTo folder has no Hidden file attribute,
because the SendTo menu won't show file/folder if it has it - even though
the Windows Explorer is already configured to show hidden files/folders.

Also, the SendTo menu items are only from the current user's profile and the
"All Users" profile. The items will only came from up to two user profiles.
So, if you run Notepad using a third different user via the "run as"
right-click popup menu, then access the SendTo menu from the File Open
dialog, the SendTo menu will have different set of items which came from
"All Users" profile, and that third user account's profile. It won't include
the items which came from the user account which was used to login into
Windows.

JJ:

The items are not marked as hidden.

There are only two users on this system - Administrator and Default User and the
Send To folder for each account has identical entries.

John,

It does show some other items that I have added but no longer shows
"Notepad" (though it did at one time) or any other newly added items!!

That it shows some of your(!) items but not others is rather strange, and
makes me, just like JJ, suspect that you might be looking at the wrong "send
to" folder(s).

Suggestion: go to your {username}'s "send to" folder, find an item
(preferrably a shortcut) that you can see in a file/folders context-menu
"send to" entry, and move it outof the "send to" folder to another one (do
*not* delete it, you want to move it back after the test).

After that open the context menu of a file or folder and see if the item has
gone from the menus "send to" entry there. If not see if the same item
exists in the "Default User" "send to" folder, also move it outof there and
than check again.

If its still there you probably are not looking at (and changing!) the
correct "send to" folder.

Also check the
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders\SendTo" and
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders\SendTo" keys. The first one should contain the full expanded
path to your "Send To" folder, the latter one "%USERPROFILE%\SendTo"

Hope that helps.

Regards,
Rudy Wieser

P.s.
At my end both the {your name}and "Default User" SendTo folders have the
ReadOnly and Hidden flags set, and they contain "desktop.ini" files with the
System and Hidden flags set.

Maybe check all the shortcuts and make sure they actually
have valid target data. I can't think of anything else to check.
Also, this isn't the answer you're looking
for, but you can add EXEs to the context menu at the top,
like "Open with Notepad". I use about 6 of those myself, as
well as about a dozen SendTo links going to folders.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\Open With Notepad
default value: "Open with Notepad"

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\Open With Notepad\Command
default value: "C:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe" "%1"

Both the registry keys you mentioned have the correct data as you described.

I have found references to a "Sendtofix.vbs" that claims to fix the problem but
I hesitate to try it not understanding what it does.

Mayayana:

I have checked that the shortcuts do have valid targets. I also tried potting a
copy of NOTEPAD.EXE in the Send To folders but that did not work either.

Explorer's context menu does have an entry for Notepad and I can obviously work
around this but it is frustrating that it used to work and now does not.

Default XP "Send To" folder not working

John,

Both the registry keys you mentioned have the correct data as you
described.

Great. That pretty-much rules out you have another "SendTo" folder hidden
somewhere.

I have found references to a "Sendtofix.vbs" that claims to fix the
problem but I hesitate to try it not understanding what it does.

You already did most of it. :-)

The only remaining commands are these :

WshShell.RegWrite "HKCR\exefile\shellex\DropHandler\",
"{86C86720-42A0-1069-A2E8-08002B30309D}", "REG_SZ"
WshShell.RegWrite "HKCR\lnkfile\shellex\DropHandler\",
"{00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}", "REG_SZ"

Which just mean you could also check if the two HKCR\xxx registry paths
contain those {....} GUID keys (HKCR - HKEY_CURRENT_USER).

You could also just run the script (it looks harmless enough), but that robs
you of being able to see if eitherr of the above registry keys is the
culprit.

After that I'm out of suggestions I'm afraid.

Rudy Wieser

Rudy:

I ran the "Sendtofix.vbs" script and it worked fine!!

Thanks for your guidance but I sure wish I knew what FUBARED it.

Glad to hear that and you're welcome. :-)

but I sure wish I knew what FUBARED it.

You could throw some more Googeling at it using the either of the two GUIDs
together with "shortcut stops working" o.i.d and get *some* possibilities.
Other than that you're out of luck (Windows does not keep a log of registry
read/write actions).
