Making SeaMonkey the default from an XP perspective
Making SeaMonkey the default from an XP perspective
Shouldn't I be able to go into Folder Options, find all the references to Firefox and change them to SeaMonkey and won't that do it? I changed 4 out of 5 and I'm 99.9% certain the last one is relevant, but nothing has changed afaict. That is, clicking on a link in Eudora or in Agent still opens FF. Do I have to restart Windows after I make a change like this? (I have restarted it, fwiw.) At least temporarily, I want to make SeaMonkey the defaul, but when I installed it, I said No. So I googled how to make it the default and it said that I should make sure the preferences say to ask every time SM is started, and they do say that, but it never asks. So I went to Folder Options and made the changes above, for http, https, and two others, but it made no difference. Shouldnt' that have done it? |

I've never used Seamonkey but here's someone that shows you, yep, there's a setting right in Seamonkey. See http://seamonkey.ilias.ca/browserfaq/Default. You never bothered to mention to Google hits that you say tell you how to set Seamonkey as the default. None of the procedures mentioned here produce a prompt. YOU go to the settings to make the change. Seamonkey is not listed as a choice in Add/Remove Programs - Set Program Access and Defaults (http://tinyurl.com/mjcsdcl)? |

Windows XP - Folder Options General tab: http://tinyurl.com/n58t2gc View tab: http://tinyurl.com/kr569n5 File Types tab: http://tinyurl.com/lnbgu4m This is just an example of what the File Type tab looks like, right? You're not saying anything particular about the "Folder" file type, iiu? Offline Files tab: http://tinyurl.com/m5rxlqq FWIW I actually don't have that tab. So where are you seeing all those settings to set any web browser as the default one? Just to be clear, not *any* web browswer, only Sea Monkey, and it's in Alt / Edit / Preferences / Advanced / Check Default Application Settings on Startup. (To reply to JP, my recollection is that this was checked, but it certainly is now) And this is what the webpage I found said to use, which made sense because the first time it started, it gave me a list of the things it does, web, email, usenet, etc. and had a checkbox for each to make them the default. HOWEVER, I JUST FOUND an option I'd missed before, called Make SeaMonkey the Default, so the setting I was looking at must mean something else, and it looks like the problem is solved. Where are you really changing setting to select a default web browser? You're claiming Seamonkey does not itself have its own setting to make it the default web browser? None of the procedures mentioned here produce a prompt. YOU go to the settings to make the change. I had gone to settings. Seamonkey is not listed as a choice in Add/Remove Programs - Set Program Access and Defaults (http://tinyurl.com/mjcsdcl)? Very interesting. |

Agent might but it's not set. Eudora doesn't. |

John You Know XP Have A Default Setup Page On Add Or Remove Programs In good XP You Have To Use Start And On Click It Click On Setting Click On Control Panel Click On Add Or Remove Programs Click On Set Programs Access And Defaults Hey, that's pretty good. Either I never clickedon Pr Acc and Def or I did and was discouraged by the MS and non-MS choices, but Custom is pretty good. Maybe I never looked at it before. Still the presence of 2 other ways to set the default browser doesn't explain why changing the "Open with" program in Folder Options / File Types didn't work I changed it for .htm, .html, .xht, and .xhtml, all from Firefox to Sea Monkey. Why didn't this change which browser opened when I clicked on a link????? (For the record but unimportant:I didn't change it for .hta, which it calls an HTML application, which I think I recall was set for Firefox, but now it's set for MS HTML Application Host.) Making SeaMonkey the default from an XP perspective At least temporarily, I want to make SeaMonkey the defaul, but when I installed it, I said No. BTW, Sea Monkey has been working a lot better than Firefox, only freezing totally once in 12 days and letting me start a lot more tabs. Only freezing for a short time maybe 5 times. It's missing some of the features of FF, like when I make a bookmark, there's no indication that I've made one, so I've probably bookmarked the same thing twice. And others. But it works much better. |

It's missing some of the features of FF, like when I make a bookmark, there's no indication that I've made one, so I've probably bookmarked the same thing twice. And others. But it works much better. https://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/ Version 2.46 (latest) was released back on December, 22, 2016. Seamonkey is not current with its fork against Firefox. They remain behind several versions of Firefox. You might have the same effect of "works much better" had you remained with an older version of Firefox. https://www.seamonkey-project.org/news "SeaMonkey 2.46 released: Building on the same Mozilla platform as Firefox 49, ..." Seamonkey's latest offering is based on an older version of Firefox. You did not mention what version of Firefox you were using that did not work how you wanted. No mention, either, of bitwidth (32 or 64). The 64-bit version of Firefox is more stable and crashes far less than the 32-bit version. However, "Windows XP" means the 32-bit operating system. "Windows XP x64" was actually Windows 2003 Server crippled down to a workstation feature set with the XP desktop. Since you are likely using 32-bit Windows XP, you cannot take advantage of the stability enhancements in the 64-bit version of Firefox. Since Seamonkey forks their code from Firefox, and since Firefox is dropping support for Windows XP, then so will Seamonkey drop support for Windows XP. It has already happened for both Firefox and Seamonkey. https://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/legacy "SeaMonkey 2.49 will be the last version supporting Windows XP" https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...s-xp-and-vista "Firefox version 52 will be the last complete update for Windows XP" Currently you can get a later code branch of Firefox running on Windows XP than you can with Seamonkey. Version 2.49 of Seamonkey, the last version to support Windows XP, may fork from Firefox 52 (I didn't bother to hunt around to find out what they plan for their 2.49 version as to what Firefox version they will fork). Mozilla will support Windows XP up to version 52 of Firefox. To see what changes are present in Firefox after version 49, you can review the changelogs of versions 50, 51, and 52 and their minor versions at: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/releases/ Extensions you install into Firefox are stored under your profile you load under Firefox. They are not available elsewhere or even in other Firefox profiles. You likely installed Seamonkey with a different suite of extensions, if any. You sure the problems you experienced with Firefox were not due to whatever extensions you installed just for your Firefox profile? |
