First you need a wifi network adapter compatible with XP.

What is your adapter? Device manager/ Network adapters.

Get to device manager via Start/ Settings/ CP (Control Panel)/ System/
Hardware tab/ Device manager button/ (View menu - devices by type)

That view may also show you if there is some trouble with an adapter.

If this is a laptop, be sure the WiFi switch in on ;-)

I have wasted some time on that one.

If you are using XP SP3, press the Windows and "R" keys simultaneously, type
"cmd /k sc query wzcsvc" into the "Open" box and click "OK". If the "STATE"
of the wireless service is ":1 STOPPED", type "sc config wzcsvc start= auto"
and press "Enter". Be sure to leave a space between "start=" and "auto". Then
restart the computer. If the wireless service is already running, type "control netconnections",
press "Enter", and make sure the wireless connection is enabled. If it isn't, double-click it
to enable it. When you see the small terminal icon in the lower right corner next to the clock,
right-click it, select "View Available Wireless Networks", find and highlight the network you
are trying to access and click "Connect".

What will all the above do if the computer is a desktop with, currently,
no wifi hardware?

All it does is configure the computer to start the Wireless Zero service
automatically at bootup.

I was asking because Norm has a desktop machine, currently without wifi;
I was wondering if doing what you describe would make it Just Start
Working if he plugs in an (XP-compatible, obviously) USB wifi dongle.

I did look at that page [not expecting to understand it (-:!], but I got
to "Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008,
Windows 7, Windows Server 2003 with SP2, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows
Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2003 with SP1,
Windows 8".

Science isn't about being right every time, or even most of the time. It is
about being more right over time and fixing what it got wrong.

I just tried it with my USB wireless stick and immediately got a "Wireless Networks detected"
popup.
