Default cannot access internet when firewall is turned off

Please help!
I ahave a friend who is running XP SP1, zone alarm free version and AGV anti
virus.
The problem is when we turn off the windows firewall he is not able to
send/receive e mail or access the internet.
This happens whether zonealarm is turned on or off!
as soon as we turn XP firewall back on he can access the web again.
What causes this to happen and is there a fix for it?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Users should only be using one firewall at a time and my guess is that when
Windows Firewall is turned off then some other application/software firewall
is blocking access and that application needs to be correctly configured.
You can try booting into Safe Mode with networking to see if that works and
if it does then you definitely have an application that is filtering network
traffic but beware that booting into Safe Mode with networking will leave
your computer vulnerable to internet attacks if you do not have a firewall
device or an "internet router" protecting your network if using cable/DSL.
You might try uninstalling and reinstalling ZA if that is the firewall you
want to use after disconnecting from the internet and disabling the Windows
Firewall before installing ZA which should give you the opportunity to
reconfigure it again. If none of that helps you have another application
that is filtering your network traffic and you could try using msconfig to
selectively disable startup applications/services to try and figure out
which application is doing it but be sure to restore normal startup when you
are done. --- Steve
