Default Trouble importing .avi into movie maker

I'm attempting to stitch together a home movie captured using our DV camera.
When attempting to import the saved .avi files into Movie maker, I receive
the error message "filename.avi could not be imported..." or the import
window is displayed but the progress bar does't move, essentially freezing
the program.
I ran G-spot tool and the codec section displays "4CC DVSD"
I have installed the DivX 5.2.1 codec pack but nothing seems to work.
I can view the .avi clips using the Divx player only, and not Windows
Mediaplayer.
Any suggestions please.

I'm pretty sure 4CC codecs are included in the XviD codec pack at
www.xvidmovies.com
