that's when you create the first account with admin priveleges.

you can access the original admin account by pressing ctrl-alt-del twice on
the welcome screen. just use administrator as login name if you have not
changed it and use your password.

if you want the original administrator account to explicitly appear on your
welcome screen, download tweakui for xp from the microsoft site and you can
have this option on.

hope this helps.

You cannot - this is by design to prevent people from logging in as the
Admin and using it as an every day account. You have three options

1) If you're running Pro, hit CTRL+ALT+DEL twice on the welcome screen to
bring up a 2000 like login menu - you can select the Administrator from
there.

2) If you're using Home, then the Administrator is only available in Safe
Mode. To enter safe mode, tap F8 repeatedly as the computer boots.

3) And I don't recommend this (if you've got kids, make sure the account
has a password) download TweakUI from the Microsoft site (just search for
Windows XP Powertoys) and use this to make the main Admin user visible.

Greetings --

The built-in Administrator account really isn't intended to be
used for day-to-day normal use. The standard security practice is to
set a strong password on it and use it only to create another account
for regular use, reserving the Administrator account as a "back door"
in case something corrupts your regular account(s).

As you've learned, once any additional user accounts have been
created, the Administrator account will no longer be displayed on the
Welcome Screen. This is a default security feature. By design, the
only way to log into the Administrator account of WinXP Home is to
reboot into Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at
the Welcome Screen will produce the standard login dialog box.
