Herbert,

You can export the the bookmarks as a html file

Do you know of a way to do that from the commandline (or automated
otherwise) (FF v52.5) ?

You can export bookmarks to bookmarks.html each time the browser shuts
down by setting "browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML" "true" in
"about:config"

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.bo...autoExportHTML

If you add this bookmarks.html to the bookmarks itself, you can
easily access it from Firefox.

When I change that setting my Firefox 52 creates an empty file called
"bookmarks.json" when it exits.

Your page has a link to a bug related to json/html but I can't work out what
they fixed and what they didn't.

Have you found a Firefox 52 add-on which gets around this?

I haven't done a thorough search yet. With a quick search, I found one
which can at least give what you need.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...nager-and-view
er/

Note: only old addons will work with older Firefox version. The one
displayed on that URL is the latest version of the addon and it shows
that it's not available for your Firefox version. That's not what you
should be looking for.

In that page, scroll down to the "More information" section and click
the "See all versions" link. In that addon versions list, find the
latest version which do not have the ugly red warning box, then click
the "Add to Firefox" button.

FYI, I found that addon from the official Firefox addons site.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/extensions/

The search query I used was: bookmark manager

Use the above method to find other addons for your Firefox version.

I see three older versions (0.26, 0.1.4, 0.1.3) but none of them are
avialable to install.

Registering on the site doesn't give access to the downloads.

There's none. The available columns when in search result view, a Name,
Tag, Location, Most Recent Visit, Visit Count, Description, Added, Last
Modified. Where the first three are already shown, and the Location column
shows an URL instead of the containing bookmark folder.

I have no idea who designed the bookmark function. It seems so incomplete.

The bookmark.html should be in your profile folder http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder

What happens if you manually export the bookmarks to a html file?
Select "Show all bookmarks" and then "Export Bookmark to html"

For searching old bookmarks it should be sufficient to do this only
all few weeks or month.

Netscape Communicator designed it :-)

This is why, if you downloaded source, you might find some ns_
functions in the source.

Firefox has a history.

Seamonkey is like Netscape Communicator, only newer.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_web_browsers

There was NCSA Mosaic (I built one from source at work, IT made me discard it).
Followed by Netscape (Communicator was a suite).
Followed by Firefox and Seamonkey (provides a suite).

When a code monkey runs in there, it will notice the
"smell" is wrong, and head back out again :-) A musty
damp, old code smell.

You need a sense of humor for this work.

But it's obviously been _removed_; it _was_ there in earlier versions
(such as the 27 I use).

Netscape Communicator designed it :-)

That's it. Thank you.

As the html file is created automatically then it would be useful
sometimes to launch it in a different browser.

I recall an old XP utility which allowed you to select a bookmark
(presumably from a html bookmark file) and choose which browser to launch
it in. Can't think of its name now.

You can put a link to bookmarks.html on the desktop. A double click
opens the bookmark file with the default browser, but you can also
right click and select "open with" and then select the browser you
want to use (explorer, edge, opera, ..).

You can also use bookmarks.html as start page in Firefox. When
you start Firefox, the bookmarks are displayed and with a middle
click you can open any link in the bookmark file in a new tab.

I find not all old browsers render a given page correctly.

I think this might(?) be what I have seen before. It replaces the default
browser when a link is clicked (I don't actually remember that bit) and lets
you choose which browser to open.

Hmm, the name sounded promising, but the review actually on that page
includes " nothing more than an alternative method of launching a web
browser with a blank page.", so sounds like the URL-passing isn't
working very well.

Good if your Internet has a generous cap.

Heh, are there /still/ providers that have caps? Even my mobile data has a cap
after which the maximum transfer speed drops, the data itself is unlimited.
Come to think of it, I've never had a plan for Internet with caps.
