Default Verifiy and repair system files

Hi. Yesterday I had a virus hit my XP system. Although my anti-virus
software caught it, several system files were altered. I got a prompt
asking me restore system files from the SP3 CD. What CD? All my
Windows updates, including the SP2 & SP3 patches, come from the
Internet. So how do I create a CD?

Hmmm. I recall a command line program that checks, verifies, and
replaces corrupted system files. Anyone remember the command? Although
I don't remember their names, I also recall taking compressed system
files from the original Windows installation CD and placing them on the
hard drive. Anyone remember their extensions? I also remember the last
time I verified files I was able to change the file path from the CD to
the hard drive.

Question. Is it possible to update the original installation compressed
files with SP2 and SP3 patches?

Hello,

For the command, you mean SFC http://support.microsoft.com/kb/222193 (search
sfc.exe). The command SFC /SCANNOW will perform the scan, but will most
likely still ask for your installation discs

By update, you mean slipstream SP3 installation file with your SP2
installation disc
http://www.google.com/search?q=slipstream+sp3

When you do the above, you can burn a new SP3 disc or just put the updated
i386 folder in your C Drive and point to it whenever XP needs the SP3 disc

type: sfc /scannow in the cmd window, then press enter and it'll
check for and replace any important system files.

Have a XP system disk ready.
After you've completed that, then go to Windows update.

Dennis

If you are using CA Anti-Virus do nothing. Wait for the next Virus
Definitions update to correct the error by CA.

Already been fixed in version 6606, the OP may need to restore the files
from quarantine.

Thanks for the replies. Now I remember. A while back I copied the i386
folder from the installation CD to the hard drive and adjusted the
registry so that sfc would search the folder on the hard drive. Only
ran sfc a couple times. Since then, of course, I've installed SP2 &
SP3. Now I'm afraid to run sfc because it might want a SP2 or SP3 file.
Question. Is there a way to update the i386 folder to include SP2 & SP3
files?

Why, happens all the time, AVG if I recall correctly had a similar incident
a while back but it caused much more severe issues.

If you have the i386 folder in the root drive (that is, C:\i386), then
follow these instructions:

http://homeofficeforum.ca.com:80/hom...4&postcount=61

That will give you an up-to-date i386 folder.

Pain in the neck, I know! Next time don't be so quick to delete
quarrantined files. Even if they were malicious, they wouldn't do any
harm.

I believe my original CD was XP SP1. All the files in the c:\i386
folder are dated 3/31/2003, so it doesn't look like I slipstreamed it
for SP2. Would I need to, or does the SP3 patch include all SP2
patches?

You may certainly go from SP1 to SP3 in this case. SP3 is cumulative.
