Default Windows 10 Warning: Anger At Microsoft Rises With Serious New Failure

Joel wrote in

"The drama began yesterday as Windows 10 users suddenly found that
Search was broken with a black bar showing where search results should
be, even for those who tried to perform a local search of their files.
Breaking with tradition (1,2,3,4,5), Microsoft was fast to act blaming
a temporary server-side issue. But the explanation instead kicked a
hornets nest. First, the fix doesnt work for everyone. Second, and
more worryingly, Microsofts explanation doesnt add up and it has
prompted serious questions to be asked about how the operating system
works and what personal data it is sharing."

Sounds like Microsoft is doing the Linux advocacy for us.

Is 2020 the year of the Linux desktop?
The unwashed bearded freaks of the Linux community have been squawking
for decades about Linux taking over the Windows desktop.
At last check, the numbers for Linux desktop are actually going down, if
that's even possible.

Let's be honest, if Linux couldn't capitalize on such awful Windows
releases as Windows ME and Windows 8, it will never gain traction as a
desktop operating system.

I do agree with you that Microsoft is far better at advocating Linux than
the Linux zealots are. How could they possibly be worse?

BTW, that site is God awful looking.
Did snit (Michael Glasser) have something to do with it?
It sure looks that way.

Time is on Linux's side. Microsoft can't hope to keep everyone using
Win10 with these ridiculous bugs and invasions of privacy.

Let's be honest, if Linux couldn't capitalize on such awful Windows
releases as Windows ME and Windows 8, it will never gain traction as a
desktop operating system.

Windows Me was long before Linux became more suitable for typical
users, and Windows 8.x came along when Win7 was still supported. The
end of support for Win7 coinciding with Win10 becoming a mess means an
impetus for people to try Linux.

I do agree with you that Microsoft is far better at advocating Linux than
the Linux zealots are. How could they possibly be worse?

That's your opinion. In any event, I'm all for it if Win10 drives
people to Linux.

BTW, that site is God awful looking.
Did snit (Michael Glasser) have something to do with it?

You've never heard of Forbes?

Liar.

We've just been laughing at the monopolists' clumsy attempts at
killing Linux.

How's their "Edge" browser doing, these days? I hear that it's going
to be based upon Chrome. LOL

What do most users really need WinDOS for, anymore?

At last check, the numbers for Linux desktop are actually going down, if
that's even possible.

Even if true, more than made-up for, by Android Linux increases. :-D

How is Winphone going? :-D

You're right about that. It was proof that the markert was borked,
that most people felt locked into monopolyware.

And now, with the "decktop" in decline, there is no room for growth.

I do agree with you that Microsoft is far better at advocating Linux than

Look, buddy, we won, and you lost. M$ no longer dominates personal
computing.

That's the best that you can do? Thanks for the laughs, troll.

Especially funny is when your only response to Winphone's failure is
to bring up the "OpenMoko".

*Gosh* I think that Winphone had about 1000x the resources behind it!
I think that Winphone had the full backing of the mighty Micro$oft
Corp behind it! And it's a FAILURE. LOL!

Oh, and the success of Android proves that "fragmentation" beats
"committees".

Idiot.

Killing Linux?
Microsoft doesn't have to kill Linux. All they have to do is present
their OS and applications and support and compare it to Linux.
Linux is self exterminating. The more one uses Linux, the more one wants
to get rid of Linux.

See Munich for details.

I've been running Linux for a year and I'm only more dedicated to it,
the more I hear about Microsoft's ****ups.

From where I sit, the world's largest Starbucks BTW, I see Macbooks,
ipads, Windows laptops, and not too many Android tablets but some, lot's
of Android phones.

But NO LINUX...
I don't see a single laptop running Linux, and I took a nice stroll
around the grounds to walk off that last cup o java.

And you can perform this same experiment just about anywhere and get the
same results.
Except maybe not in the M.I.T cafeteria.

Desktop Linux has been an abject failure.
Even Linus Torvalds agrees.
And guess what his reason for Linux desktop's failure is?

Wait for it................

FRAGMENTATION.

So there goes your theory chrisv, about more choice is better.
At least when it comes to Linux.

In other words, a bunch of people willing to spend $6.99 on a cup of
coffee just so they can use the WiFi at an overrated coffee joint are
the typical computer user. I rest my case. Linux may not gain the
*majority* of desktop computers, but it will rise in usage.

I hadn't heard that being on the net yet. Interesting.

It seems that VS supports iPhone and Android in their development
environment. Plus a bit of ARM support as well.

Wow!
That's too bad.
I feel sorry for you.

I see you use slrn. Trying to bring back those crazy bearded Unix
years circa 1970? Does Stallman still sleep in a closet at MIT?

actually, he slept in his office, however, he was forced out of both

What kind of OS ties a local search to a remote server? What
kind of OS includes a search function at all? Only a piece
of junk OS, that's what kind.

File search is a function that should be totally separate
from an OS. File search should never be an integral part
of the OS. With GNU/Linux, file search is provided by
a variety of completely separate user-space tools.

Micro**** Winblows demonstrates yet again that it
is not fit to be considered a choice for personal
computing -- except for total idiots.

https://askubuntu.com/questions/5657...-amazon-button

"When you perform any search in Unity’s dash, your
search terms will be sent to Canonical. Canonical
forwards these search terms to third parties, such as Amazon,
on your behalf"

"We picked Amazon as a first place to start because
most of our users are also regular users of Amazon,
and it *pays us* to make your Amazon journey get off
to a faster start"

The comments in the thread, are strangely, "normalizing corruption".

Your religion doesn't have "Holiness", it's just
waiting for "opportunity" to knock at the door.

All the same kinds of personalities are involved.

And when Canonical made that decision, it was as much
about "advertising to random bags of money", that
"we're corruptible, come on down".

Uh, *you* added the Win10 group to the thread, I posted the original
post in the thread to COLA alone. As for me affording overpriced
coffee, I don't even like xanthines. I drink name brand soda and
sometimes energy drinks. I have spent a lot on energy drinks in the
past, in fact, I'm not destitute financially. I spend a lot on beer,
these days, too, which ain't anywhere near free.

Been able to disable it the day it was introduced. It was a mistake, and
the real mistake was at first it was ENABLED BY DEFAULT, counter to all
that Linux stands for...however it is nowhere near what MS does. Classic
