Default Probs installing XP service pack 1 and crit updates

After recently reverting back to my factory settings and
having to go through the task of DL'ing all the windows
updates I am left with 17 critical updates including XP
service Pack 1 (EXPRESS).
As you have to do SP1 separately from the others I have
tried this with no luck and have the same trouble with
the remaining 16 too!!!
It downlaods with no problems but with the SP1 it
finishes the installation ultra fast saying the install
was successful and to restart. After doing this and going
back to windows update it still says I need the service
pack and so go through the process but get the same
result every time. This happens too with the remaining 16
critical updates!!!
Can anyone help me?!
