messenger 's constant access attempt
I have XP Home and Windows Messenger 4.7.0041. I
discovered that messenger does not actually uninstall in the add/remove option, as just removes the selection from the startup menu. The problem is that messenger continually attempts accessing the internet, filling up my firewall alert activity logs. How do I stop this constant attempt by messenger to access the internet or remove messenger from my pc? Thanks, |

messenger 's constant access attempt
Greetings Tetawon,
Actually Messenger on its own won't do this. Do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Windows Messenger and cause it to display this behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK. ____________________________________________ Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Messenger/MSN Messenger Associate Expert http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/ Messenger Resources - http://messenger.jonathankay.com "Tetawon" wrote in message ... Thanks Jonathan!
Before receiving your reply, I simply removed the contents from the messenger folder into another folder. Upon reboot, Norton AV threw up a nag box. Unchecking messenger protection from Norton AV and returning messenger program files to the original folder ended this problem. Please explain this... In the past I was able to disable "messenger", now it
automatically starts and places an icon on the status bar on every re-boot, restart. Is there a registry Hack or configuration that will prevent it from starting?. messenger 's constant access attempt
Jonathan,
I, too, am trying to get Windows Messenger to stop running. I do not use it, but every few seconds it is attempting to access the Internet. I have unchecked everything I can in Outlook Express/Tools/Instant Messenger Options, but it still appears to be running. I use Norton Internet Security and if I check the Statistics/View Logs/Firewall, there are constant occurences of the following: An instance of "c:\program files\messenger/msmsgs.exe" is preparing to access the internet. This occurence is every minutes and a half to 2 minutes. What do I need to do to get this to stop? I checked in Norton Antivirus/Options/Instance Messenger and the only thing checked in messengers to protect is "Instant Messenger (it does not say MSN Instant Messenger)". Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Charlie "Jonathan Kay [MVP]" wrote: Greetings Tetawon, Actually Messenger on its own won't do this. Do you have Norton Antivirus installed?
