Hi,

It's very inconsistent. I'm afraid I don't have any details of what's going on yet.

We're still getting this error today (14-40 GMT) +1 in the UK on 27/6/2006.
Didn't work on work network, although was OK before. Successfully logged in
earlier today at home on my Mac

Hi,

I'm willing to accept that it's another problem, the error codes are based on either
what
the server is returning or simply where it stops in the login process -- as such, my
assumption can easily be incorrect.

They're not random (obviously by balancing or simply by order in which user is
registered,
unfortunately I'm not privy to that exact information now). I can tell you that they're
not by region however -- locale information is simply one entry in each user's account.
As
well, the Messenger servers are located in Southern California.

Thank you Johnathan. After reading replies after your statement, if it works
on one machine and not another - Mohamed, are you using the same account to
login with? If so, Johnathan, your stament of being localized to a small
number of users cannot be quite correct, OR, Mohamed has a different problem
all together with the first machine they tried.

Are the user accounts stored on your servers randomly or by geographic/IP
address? I am in Northern Indiana and I too am having this same error. I am
also getting complaints from other users in my company using their personal
accounts to sign in and are unsuccessful.

And were is this status page you speak of? I tried to find Messenger's
site, but am getting redirected to the new Live site. I thought it use to be
www.msn.com/messenger....

Thanks for your time!

Also cannot connect to messenger from any machine in my network, here in the

Hi,

It may just be inconsistently working. But I -highly- doubt it's not a problem with your PC
as there is too many people who are just experiencing the problem today.

Hi Eric,

Well, it's 7:56AM Redmond time, so someone has to be awake to change it, let alone reboot .

Joking aside, the status page really doesn't change unless the entire service is down. This
is not the only Messenger community I monitor and there aren't that many reports of this
problem elsewhere (yet anyway).

Looked up the error on Live.com and came up with the following:
"Error 81000314, 81000377 or 81000378: Your contact list is not available
If you receive one of these messages, your contact list is not available or
is in read-only mode. Wait a few minutes, and then try to sign in again."

But I'm starting to think that the status page needs to be changed to "there
is a potential problem that we are aware of and (i hope) are trying to fix
it". Perhaps a reboot - it works well for my 2003 Servers... lol (little IT
humor in the MS world)

Thanks again!

Hi,

Well, the error code is indicating an account problem (probably one of the SQL databases), so
it doesn't matter what computer, network or where on the planet you are.

They're not random (obviously by balancing or simply by order in which user is
registered,
unfortunately I'm not privy to that exact information now). I can tell you that
they're
not by region however -- locale information is simply one entry in each user's
account.
As
well, the Messenger servers are located in Southern California.

Hi,

Well, the error code is indicating an account problem (probably one of the SQL databases), so
it doesn't matter what computer, network or where on the planet you are.

Hi,

I'm willing to accept that it's another problem, the error codes are based on either
what
the server is returning or simply where it stops in the login process -- as such, my
assumption can easily be incorrect.

Right now I can't access from MSN Messenger 7.5. I get the 81000314
message like everyone else.
I have read the thread so it does look like a server issue.

For some reason though, Web Messenger works.

Jonathan, any idea why the regular client does not work, but the web
browser client works fine?

Hi,

Well the login process is different -- just like if you use Windows Messenger (not Live) it
uses a completely different version of the protocol which might allow you to sign in.

If one allows you to sign in but another doesn't it's either inconsistent or a problem with
the process involved with signing in with a specific version of the client.

Either way, I hope to have more details within the hour.
