Admin Logon Missing

MY QUESTION

My laptop crashed. When re-installing Acrobat 6.0 Standard I get a message
(AFTER all components have been loaded): "Acrobat can't continue. You need
administrator privledges"..WELL, under user accts. I AM the Admin.

i think u have admin priviliges but not as admin.
Only default administrator can access registry for some applications.
So check whether Administrator account is held and you login as administrator.
try it.

I am the only user. Designation=administrator. I tried to create a new user
titled Administrator. It says it already exists...I CAN'T FIND THE BUILT IN
ADMIN. MY OS IS XP HOME AND PRO

Any suggestions on how to fix???

You can determine the names of all accounts on your computer as follows:
Click on "Control Panel"
Click on "Administrative Tools"
Click on "Computer Management"

On the side pane of this view, you will see "Local Users and Groups"
Click on this button.
To see all users, click on "Users"

If I understand your post correctly, you are logging to the an account that
is called "administrator". This account is the default name of the built in
account. If my understanding is not correct, then the above process will
allow you to determine which group that contains your login account.

As Windows XP is not case sensitive, the message you received is correct.
You cannot have two accounts with the same name on this or any other
operating system.

There is NO account that is called "administrator". The default account is
MISSING.
How can I locate it??

You didn't see a tree starting with "Computer Management (Local)"?
You didn't see in that tree a button called "System Tools"?
You didn't see under that button another button called "Local Users and
Groups"?
My systems have all of these items.
If you do not see all of these items, the most likely guess is that your
control panel is lacking one or more of the Microsoft Management Console
snapins. You can read about MMC in Help & Support.

There must be an account whose default name is "administrator" which is a
member of the administrators group because this account cannot be deleted.
This account can be renamed to whatever name you desire.

Is the name of the default account MISSING or are you just using capital
letters for emphasis?

There is NOTHING on the left (Computer Mgmt/System Tools) saying "Local Users
and Groups". Only event viewer/shared folders/performance logs/device
mgr/storage/services and applications...

You're OS can't be XP Home and Pro. It's one or the other. I suspect it's XP
Home Edition. The built-in Administrator account can only be access on an XP
Home Edition system in Safe Mode.

Restart your computer. Keep tapping the F8 key until you see the Windows
Advanced Options Menu. Select Safe Mode. If your computer is configured to
log on your account automatically you can log off to the Welcome screen. You
should now see the Administrator account listed.

The Local Users and Groups snap-in is not available on a system running XP
Home Edition. That would account for the OP not seeing it listed in the
Computer Management console.

That's only one of the significant differences between XP Pro and Home.
