Can't Get to MS Store!
I have Win 8 on a laptop with Classic Menu (and some other tricks --
eliminate the lock screen, boot to desktop, etc.) I went to Metro and clicked Store. The tile appeared but after a few seconds it disappeared! 1) What could be wrong? Is it that I am using a local account? 2) How can I get 8.1 without going to the store? Thanks. |

Weird, if true. I thought a trip to Windows Store was inescapable. ******* I bought my copy of Windows 8 via the $39.95 download route. There is a trick, where you can visit that download site a second time, and get Windows 8.1 (3GB). So I have Windows 8.1 as an ISO now. ******* http://www.howtogeek.com/184604/why-...o-windows-8.1/ "Update: We’ve been informed by a Microsoft employee that, while the update does indeed appear in the Store, it does not require a Microsoft account to download. We were apparently wrong here - in our defense, the preview version of Windows 8.1 required a Microsoft account to download from the Store and nothing else in the Store functions without a Microsoft account." And that apparently didn't work for you. Now, I'm going to have to boot Windows 8 to see what happens to my (local account only) setup... :-) Paul |

Now, I'm going to have to boot Windows 8 to see what happens to my (local account only) setup... :-) Paul Using the Windows Store tile did work, with my local-account-only 8.0 setup, and I was offered a 3.42GB download. It didn't look exactly like this, because the Windows Store also offered to upgrade my "junk tiles" as well, so multiple items were visible. Whereas, on a previous occasion, the computer downloaded 100MB of files and messed around on its own (with Windows Update turned off!). So you should be seeing this happen, if using a local account. http://windowssecrets.com/wp-content...7-TS-Store.png So I guess that means 8.0 + Windows_8.1 3.42GB + Windows_8.1 Update 1 ~600+ MB = latest_patch_level (Windows Store) (five or more Windows Update files) During the Windows Store one, you'll probably be facing the Microsoft Account attempt again, so read up on how to avoid it if desired. http://windowssecrets.com/top-story/...an-ms-account/ HTH, Paul |

I was able to get into the store by setting up a non-local account. The download succeeded but the installation failed with an 0x80070004 error. Googling that led me to running sfc /scannow in Safe Mode (and that was a trip and a half getting to Safe Mode!) wgich failed with a bunch of stuff logged to CBS.log. Multiple instances of the following (different times and session numbers): 2014-04-09 17:44:02, Info CBS Session: 30364732_3535275593 initialized by client WindowsUpdateAgent. 2014-04-09 17:44:02, Info CBS Failed to internally open package.
