Confused
Is there an update available for 8.1?
If so, is it called 8.1 Update, or 8.1.1? Thanks. |

You have to see the changes that the Update made to know that you have successfully done the Update. (E.G., at the top of Metro windows, were are now "-" and "X" choices in the upper righthand corner when you move your cursor to the top of the screen. Also, if you have a Metro app working and you switch to the desktop, the Metro app's icon will appear in the desktop taskbar.) |

Hi, Big Al.
KB29191355 about ~880meg It's KB2919355. You slipped in an extra "1". My "Installed Updates" lists it as installed twice, on 4/8/14 and on 4/18/14. But it installed easily, works well and is a major improvement. The description as listed in Update History says: paste Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based Systems (KB2919355) Installation date: ‎4/‎8/‎2014 2:13 PM Installation status: Succeeded Update type: Important Windows 8.1 Update is a cumulative set of security updates, critical updates and updates. You must install Windows 8.1 Update to ensure that your computer can continue to receive future Windows Updates, including security updates. For a complete listing of the issues that are included in this update, see the associated Microsoft Knowledge Base article for more information. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. More information: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2919355 Help and Support: http://support.microsoft.com /paste And there was another update (KB2864358) yesterday that has some users confused. See the thread started by "McGrath" today. That one also installed cleanly for me and several others, but a few users reported problems. RC -- R. C. I did mean from 8.1U2's start menu as the leaked screenshot suggests, not the existing start page ... failing that I'll happily stick with Start8's menu. |

The means to switch them off would be good enough for most people. Better still, the new fancy interface could be switched off by default so it need only be enabled by those who actually want it. Windows XP offered two easily switched interface styles, and that became so successful it doesn't want to go away. You'd think they'd learn. Rod. |

The "tile wart" on the side of the menu, should be user-tunable. Since you can drop items into it, you should also be able to drag them out again. Perhaps you can reduce it to being a relatively tall and thin unoccupied rectangle, on the side of the menu. The video with the new U2 menu demo, is here. But the file is 1.9GB and will take a while to download. It's perhaps a three hour recording of a conference, and you can see that the entire business plan is centered around those Tiles. Being able to run a Tile in a desktop window, is more important to the business strategy, than that U2 Start menu change.
