The problem is that people running XP are stuck on IE8. This is the
first of many vulnerabilities that they're exposed to on a permanent
basis.

Unfortunately for these users, their options are to get used to it, or
move to an OS that is still maintained. Using an alternate browser will
partially avoid this particular attack, but there will be others that
hit the OS in other areas.

Same as those (in the past) who were using 98, 98Se, and ME.
For operating systems, obsolescence is a given.
