Adding Win 8 Computer to Win 7 LAN
I'm missing something.
I have a LAN with a couple of Win 7 computers on it and I would like to add my new Win 8 computer. I would like each computer to be accessible from every other computer, and be able to transfer files from any user on one to any user on another. The computers do NOT have the same user accounts. So where do I go from here? Thanks. |

So where do I go from here? I think what is true for Win 7 is true also for Win 8: put files that you want to be shareable in the Public folder (or sub-folders of it) and share appropriate folders. That's how I've set up my various Win 7 PCs. Since you've already set up Win 7 PCs and found that the User folders (c:\users\username) folders are not writeable by a remote computer, you may well have already set up this strategy. The alternative is to alter the permissions of folders in c:\users\username to give Everyone "write" and "list folder contents" permission. I think you have to do it both for (right click) Properties | Security and Properties | Sharing | Share (in the latter case, add Everyone:RW permission. |

And in the process of making one shared folder on every machiine you of course have to turn on simple file/printer sharing. I usually make a folder C:\share on each PC and make it read/write. In my experience, the workgroup name has more to do with discovery of other PC's on the network but doesn't affect file sharing itself. |

In my Unix days, I could mount a drive from another computer on the tree of my current computer and have seemless access. That is what I'm looking for. (Of course, thet was 20 years ago. :-) |

Adding Win 8 Computer to Win 7 LAN

So where do I go from here? Thanks. When you do the share setup add the account "Everyone" and give it the permissions you want. Also, least here no account has any password and it's "simple sharing". I don't share the entire drive just specific folders and most of them are read only (multi media library etc.). On every pc there's at least a shared "Temp" folder that's read/write for all. To copy fom one pc to another I first move stuff to that folder and then using that specific pc decide where to move it to from there. Works for me but I'm very organized about it. Started when a floppy "flopped" If you want transparent sharing, you have to deal with all the issues. If you are content to copy files to an intermediate place, I find that sticking a thumb drive in the router solves that problem. You don't have to have access to any of the machines, just the router. Another way to copy files is using a simple http file server. You can copy files to/from any device with a web browser. Solves all those sticky issues with file transfer protocols/permissions/etc. with tablets and phones and older handheld devices that can't support current protocols. All the pcs are connected thru the router to the internet so makes little sense to not setup some shares over using thumbdrives. Plus I sometimes am copying 100-300Gb so don't need that much exercise |
