Default windows firewall blocks windows update

HI all,
Windows Firewall Blocks Windows update with error Code 8024402C

Microsoft provide help on this error:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/w...error-8024402C

Where it says: "This error might be caused by a program running on your
computer that is preventing Windows Update Services (SVCHOST) from
accessing the Internet. Programs that might do this include firewalls ..
blah blah"

YES THE PROGRAM RUNNING ON MY COMPUTER CAUSING THE PROBLEM IS YOUR
WINDOWS FIREWALL!! IT IS BLOCKING WINDOWS UPDATES!!!

Needless to say when I turn off the windows firewall, updates work fine.

I occasionally receive computers to repair and this has occurred on a
few computers running Vista and XP but out of the blue my Windows 7
computer is having the problem.

In the past I have tried connecting the computers direct to the router
via cable, this did not work.

I followed some advice he
http://superuser.com/questions/31284...windows-update

I reset the update components: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Interestingly I had to disable the Windows firewall to let the Fixit
program run.

All this is very unsatisfactory.

Did you check the firewall settings to see if somehow it was set to
"disallow"?

%windir%\system32\WF.msc

Thanks, I looked further at the firewall setting but could not see
anything that looked like it might be causing a problem.

However, I was pointed to another possible solution he
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1301660 and have solved the
problem by changing my adapter's DNS settings

Like this:

My adapter: (Broadcom 4313 802.11b/g/n)

I changed my adapter's preferred and Alternate DNS server to 4.2.2.1
and 4.2.2.2 respectively.

Before I changed it as above, it was set to 'obtain DNS server
automatically'

I wonder if my ISP, (TalkTalk in UK) is doing something stupid with DNS.
Probably! .... Maybe it's something to do with government spying on
internet traffic, I read somewhere the ISPs might be required to let the
spooks filter internet traffic.

Here's how I change my DNS servers In windows 7:
Network and sharing center change adapter settings Wireless network
connection (properties) Internet protocol version 4 (properties) Use
the following DNS server addresses ...

Your ISP's DNS may very well be causing problems. I personally use
4.2.2.2 and 8.8.8.8

To test for best performance and see what servers are redirecting you
due to typos or spying on your activities you need to run this tool,
it's a must-have for a technician's toolbox.

http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm

It's a two step process, let it run both steps. Many stop after the
first step and think the job is done! Read the dox.

Thanks, excellent program! It seem to indicate that 4.2.2.1 , 4.2.2.3
and 4.2.2.5 are 2nd 3rd and 4th fastest of the 72 resolvers tested.

You're welcome... enjoy no nonsense DNS !! I hate resolvers that
redirect to ads!

Funny how US based resolvers are the fastest in the UK. I would have
expected your report to have a European resolver come in 1st and 2nd.

Its not necessarily just windows firewall that causes the problem, but
this is good to know.

I have traced the same problem back to PCTools anti virus stopping the
installation of updates. Would say some other AV/firewall software is
doing the same thing.

How careful can one be when reputable AV software is becoming a problem
interfering with normal computer operations. As an example making a JPG
file in Photoshop CS5 (normal thing!) PCTools AV would not allow it to
be saved, I was having to turn off the real time protection to save the
file. Things have gone overboard.
