Try the preview, and then report back to us,
whether your excitement is justified.

I suspect you're in for a disappointment, in terms of
improvements that real people asked for. Microsoft
isn't admitting they were wrong here. It's not that
kind of an update.

It's like Microsoft "made a bad sculpture" and now
they've "added a coat of polish on the outside".
Thinking it wasn't shiny enough.

As they say in Redmond, "the jokes on you".

Thank you R.C.

Indeed, I'm GMT zone, Scotland, and I forgot that not all the world
gets up according the GMT...-

I wet to the site;
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/preview
follow the links and took the chance to "try it".
After all checks I was told ;

"Windows Update Standalone Installer
The update is not applicable to your computer."

I wonder why ? Also I noted this, which is not my case.

"Enterprise and volume license users: If you're running Windows 8 Enterprise
or the Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation on your PC, you'll need to download
the Windows 8.1 Preview ISO files. "

And of course the Windows 8.1 Preview ISO files are NOT available YET...-

Hi, Forte.

Maybe you were awake before the folks in Redmond. ;^}

It's probably all over the Internet by now. I got this paragraph with my

daily One Step Update on Quicken:
"SAN FRANCISCO, June 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft Corp. today
announced the immediate availability of the Windows 8.1 Preview, the next
update of the Windows operating system, at the company's developer-focused
Build conference. As part of the conference's keynote speech, the company
outlined the reach, design and economic opportunities for developers to
build differentiated, touch-based apps for the Windows platform, including
new developer tools and increased support. Company executives also
highlighted new top apps coming to Windows, including Facebook, Flipboard
and NFL — clear evidence of the steady app momentum for Windows, which is
experiencing the fastest growth across any platform."

As Ken Blake said, that doesn't mean that MOST of us should be in a hurry
to

download and try it, just because it is available.

If you are not a confirmed and adventurous Early Adopter, wait at least

until you hear comments from those who rush ahead of the pack.

Sorry Microsoft, but it sounds like the latter option will be a real

There's a screen shot of 8.1 preview & the ?desktop? at dailytech. The
"start button" is at the left end of a taskbar; the start "button" is
just a switch to the metro ui.........nothing useful but misleading.

8.1 Preview is available (the RTM version later this year, fall of 2013)
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...eview-download

Read the FAQ's.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...-8/preview-faq

This **is not** like other previews.
e.g.
- In order to use Windows 8.1 Preview you must sign in to your PC with a
Microsoft account
- For 64-bit installations of Windows 8.1 Preview, your CPU must also
support CMPXCHG16b, PrefetchW and LAHF/SAHF
- To access the Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need an
active Internet connection, a screen resolution of at least
1024 x 768, and a Microsoft account.
- If you start your PC from removable media that you created when you
downloaded the ISO, you won't be able to keep your apps,
Windows settings, or personal files when you update
- Uninstalling the preview isn't supported. However, it may be possible
to restore your entire system to its factory condition.
- If you're running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, you can't
uninstall the preview. To go back to your previous operating
system, you'll need to reinstall it from the recovery or installation
media that came with your PC (typically DVD media)
- If you're running Windows 8 and you install the preview using the ISO,
you won't be able to uninstall it. You'll need to
reinstall Windows 8 using recovery or installation media that came with
your PC. If you don't have recovery media, you might be
able to create a USB recovery drive.

Don't forget it's a preview, it's kind of public beta test; it might be
full of bugs or incomplete. When the final version as actually released,
you might have to reinstall everything.

Exactly! As I said earlier in this thread/

When the final version as actually released,
you might have to reinstall everything.

But no, it's not "might have to," it's "will have to." That's already
been announced.

Got the .iso file and burned the DVD. Do NOT forget to archive the
install key PLUS your media center install key if you got the free
media center add-on! If, like me, you plan to wipe your Win8 install
and maybe do a clean install later, you'll need those keys!

NOTE: A little weirdness, I could NOT get the .iso file booting into
Win7, I had to boot back to Win8 to download it. Odd?

Indeed it isn't like other previews. It's even more confusing
after getting almost use to the version 8.0.
But I welcome start button in the left bottom corner.
I'm just checking it now. First impression isn't bad.
