What's Up With Media Center
I am currently running Win 7 Pro and have a Win 8 Pro upgrade disk.
I use WIn 7 Media Center all the time. I have a TV card that I use to watch and record my favorite TV shows. I also play BLU-Ray movies and DVD movies using Win 7 Media Cenater. I hear that media Center has changed significantly in Win 8. I was warned that I should not upgrade to Win 8 because I would not like its media Center. What is different? |

If windows seven is working well for you, stay with it. Unless you have devices that need windows eight functionality, you don't want to upgrade. Stop worrying about it. It's not getting better, Microsoft is just trying to capture the ultra portable PC market. |

What is different? http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2013/05...-to-windows-8/ "In short, I find running Windows 8 on a front-room PC a slightly worse experience than Windows 7 was. This is partly because the option to launch Media Center automatically when Windows starts up has been removed. Microsoft, with depressing dogmatism, has decided that it doesn’t want your PC to boot into anything other than the Metro Start screen, so if you want to launch Media Center you’ll now have to do it yourself." "Another irritation is the fact that Windows 8 insists on a minimum vertical resolution of 768 lines. This means it refuses to support the native 720p resolution of my TV (something Windows 7 did without a murmur of complaint). The television is thus forced to use the only other mode it supports, namely 1080i emulation. We end up in the ridiculous situation of 720p media being upscaled to 1080 lines by Windows, only to be re-sampled back down to 720 lines by the TV." Paul |

It is a fee based 'Add Windows Features' option (iirc $10 for Win8 Pro and $99 for Win 8). - For a short period of time after Win8 RTM is was free to Win8 Pro early adopters. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...-center/get-it http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w.../feature-packs Purchasing and installing Win 8 Media Center does a few things. 1. Changes the name of the operating system from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8 Pro with Media Center 2. Changes the product key (the Media Center product key replaces the Windows product key) 3. Converts the prior Win8 license (OEM, retail, Personal Use System builder) to a retail license. -- -- ....winston msft mvp consumer apps |

Since Windows XP I guess, in windows explorer, in the left hand window (the "navigation pain" or whatever it's called), you must click on a folder to show its contents in the right hand window. You can no longer use the arrow key to select the folder name and automatically show its contents on the right hand side. That has to be one of the dumbest things Microsoft has ever done. I know there are lots more... |

Or is the ms media player also doing the same thing? I have to turn off autoplay because it is interferring with my copying the audio files from the nas to my usb 3 hdd since it would popup for a response needed; configuing the hdd not to response to the autoplay demand doesn't work. |
