Hi, Scott.
Not sure exactly what you want, but... On the Metro screen, move the "Desktop" tile to the upper left position. Then, on any Start or Restart, as soon as that screen appears, just press the Enter key and you will be at the familiar Win7 desktop screen. EXCEPT, of course, that there will be no Start button and no familiar Start menu list. To get the new, unrecognizable Start menu, you'll need to press the Windows key, which will send you back to the "Metro" screen, which is - as others have pointed out - just the Start menu presented as tiles, rather than as a list. All this with no fuss, no muss, no expense. It's not Win7, but it doesn't take long to get used to Win8. IF you seriously try. RC -- R. C. I have yet to run a copy of a Windows 8.1 beta, let alone try a Start8 on it. According the the Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley the Windows 8.1 user interface is not yet set in stone. It is only just recently the order from the Microsoft big wigs went to the Windows 8.1 team to return the Start Button, so we've yet to see if that includes the Start Menu. If you want to follow that beta stuff, try www.winsupersite.com and Mary Jo Foley's articles on www.zdnet.com Lemon |

Hi, Tom.
Correct. Win8 is not free, but we already own it, so there's no need for additional expense to learn to use it. Isn't it amazing how much time and expense people will spend trying to go backwards or stand still, rather than invest fewer hours (and no money) to learn how to move forward? We saw this when they tried to make Win7 look like Vista or WinXP, when they complained that WinXP was not at all like Win98 - and so on. (My then 8-year-old son was quite upset in 1978 that the TRS-80's Level II BASIC was so much more complex than the Level I BASIC that he had spend a couple of months learning. But I'm glad he made the effort to move forward; he's now a database programmer/analyst for the University of Texas. They don't write those programs in Level I BASIC! g ) RC -- R. C. And the rejection of Metro (that monetized UI, the virtual walled prison, er, garden where Microsoft takes a 30% cut from the developers and shoves ads at its customer base) *is* a move forward. Download Skip Metro Suite (Windows 8) 3.0 for Windows http://www.tomsguide.com/us/download...ndows-8-,0301- 50006.html Doesn't seem to work (in x64). For initial test, I extracted the EXE and put it on Desktop. After ticking the main checkbox, enable the start with classic desktop, I rebooted then login. But Metro is still the startup screen. Did I miss something? |
