Default Chkdsk utility

Files are unreadable and corrupt.. my computer prompts me to run chkdsk
utility...where do I find it...what is it......how do I run it.....

Default Chkdsk utility

Click on Start/My Computer/Right Click on the drive, click on Properties,
select Tools and select Error Checking.

My system tells me I have a corrupt file and need to run check disk.However
when I run check disk it tries to do it in stages and on the 2nd stage only
reaches 10% and the function ceases to operate and my coputer locks up.Anyone
with any ideas?

what drive do u mentioned? i have only cd drive in my computer.
